okay, what you do IS go to your local Amphur (city hall) and they will tell you how to get what's called a Kor Ror 22 <- that is the certificate that a thai was married abroad and registers the marriage here

Hmmm, maybe things have changed or the system has been updated for this situation. I was married in the UK, and then came to Thailand and got married again here (yes, got the wedding certificates and were asked to kiss in the district office, LOL), just with certified translations of the UK wedding certificate and my passport.

Ah, I think that is one of the documents needed for a marriage visa. I think you first need to register the marriage at the Amper office here (i.e. get the wedding certificates) to get that because the marriage must be recorded in the system for it to be issued.

I believe you are confusing TWO completely different things. One is registering a marriage here in thailand <- meaning GETTING married
When you do that you need the affirmation of freedom to marry from your consulate here, you need it translated to thai, certified by the MFA and then you can go to the local Amphur and register your marriage (get married), and when that happens you get a Kor Ror 2 and a Kor Ror 3 (one is a rose borders suitable for framing document and the other lists you twos names and the date you got married.
The other is registering the fact that a thai was married overseas:
For that you already married your thai spouse in another country and all you're doing is getting the marriage from abroad listed in the registry of marriages (you're not getting married again ;) ) and when you do that you just get a Kor Ror 22

correct, and that means you (and your thai wife) should go to the local amphur where you live and see what documents they require to issue it. In Bangkok there are 50 of them and they don't all require the same documentation, so check with them BEFORE you start rounding stuff up.. Andrew *********

You may need to get a UK marriage certificate legalised and certified in order to use it in Thailand.

You can get a certified translation along with a certified translation of your passport, and then use it to get a Thai one and also get a yellow house registration book (tabien baan) and pink Thai ID card. I think you need to do it at the district office where your Thai partner is registered.

yes and they will also issue your yellow tabien bahn and ID card (though not on the same day).You can go to a translation company in Bangkok, I used one near the British embassy, and they will get the translation stamped at the MFA for you for an extra charge. You can send the docs for translation and certification by registered delivery if you're not in Bangkok. They may be confused, I think it's the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok that does the certifying. Sometimes, they don't know the procedure and just refuse, but you can ask the Thai police in Bangkok. They were really helpful and gave me details of it and that got the district office to do it.
