Is the STV the best option for a long-term stay of 90 days in Thailand and how does exiting the country impact this?

Seeking expert advice here:

a) Looking to apply for STV (is this the best option for long term 90 days stay? since.. 1) I'm not looking to marry, 2) I'm just working hybrid and would like to travel more of Thailand as I work)

b) Plan to arrive in Thailand 6 September, travel to Siem Reap 10-14 Sep, come back to Thailand. Question: Does this "reset" my 90 day stay or how does it work?

Does the 90 day means I shouldn't exit Thailand?

c) Read up on the STV requirements and it seems I need a Thai insurance, as well as one from my home country. AND a medical declaration endorsed by a doctor to show I'm disease free. All adds up to $$. This is all necessary right?

Thank you all, I just spent 30 Days here on Visa-Exempt, heading home Monday and planning to apply for the visa back at the embassy.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is considering applying for the Special Tourist Visa (STV) for a long-term stay in Thailand, specifically for 90 days, while maintaining a hybrid work lifestyle. They inquire about exiting Thailand to travel to Siem Reap and its effect on the 90-day stay, as well as the necessary insurance and medical documents required for STV application. Responses suggest that the STV may not be the best option due to its impending end, recommending a multi-entry tourist visa instead, but caution about the legality of working remotely from Thailand on a tourist visa.

One thing to be careful of, working hybrid implies you will work inside Thailand albeit for a company outside Thailand. I'd keep very quiet about this as it's not exactly legal on a tourist visa even though people do it.

thank you for the headsup!

Forget the STV, it's coming to an end. Go for a multi-entry tourist visa and with extensions and two strategic border bounces you can get almost nine months from the one visa

sorry one question for tourist visa - they require health insurance to cover at least US$100k, do i buy this in thailand?

There's no insurance requirement for a tourist visa. Advise you to have adequate travel insurance.

Extremely helpful. Thank you all. When would you suggest I start applying for the 30 day extension? On the 50th day here?

@Perko ********
You can normally apply with less than 30 days remaining on your entry stamp (some Immigration Offices require less though - you need to ask locally)

If you have a flexible ticket you might be able to change the date at no cost.

i see. totally inexperienced here. i assumed if i apply STV and leave before 30 Sep, the 90 days starts from the day I land in Thailand

Perko G Rose. You get only 1x90 days, cannot be extended, and if you leave the country in that 90 days, the visa is cancelled and you cannot re-enter on it

Thank you. so if I enter 6 September, and do not leave the country for 90 days, that's ok right? As i plan to head home year end

But you have to get a bunch of extra stuff for the STV. Insurance, medical clearance, prepaid booking. If you just get a tourist visa you can get 60 days upon entry and extend for 30 days in the country. And don't have to jump through any of those other hoops for the same 90 days.

Thank you for this! Is it a definite I can extend for 30 days in the country? I got to plan my air ticket around this. Thanks again :)

30 day extension on a tourist visa is basically a formality.

BUT your airline might not let you board a flight to Thailand if you are arriving on a 60 day visa but your flight out of Thailand is later than that.

So might need to purchase proof of onward travel within 60 days even if you don't intend to use it, like a bus or train ticket to a neighboring country, or google "onward ticket" for other services that could assist with this.

That's correct. You would be stamped in until December 5.
