Any Tips on getting marriage visa to Thai government employee/ civil servant where she needs approval From the college University?

I'm American And hold a European passport.... She is a Thailand citizen and a professor at a technology University which is a government school ... So she has checked with her school and she needs permission to marry a foreigner and that can take anywhere from 3 months to one year...

I'm currently in Thailand now with her... I plan on going back to America in a few weeks to work and save money for the next 6 months to one year and then move here with her.

So here is my question or dilemma or if anyone has any tips....

Apparently she needs the notarized letter from the American embassy that I am single and able to be married..

She basically has to submit some paperwork and a background check and then they will say yes or no. But probably yes, it's just something I guess every government employee like that has to go through.

If I get the letter that I'm single from the embassy now... That is notarized by them and then have professionally translated.... It's probably not going to get accepted and I will have to redo all the paperwork again when I come back to move to Thailand.

... So then I guess my plan is to apply for the O marriage visa once I'm back in America and have the 400K baht in my US account.... And then I guess I have to go to Thailand and open up a new account And transfer it to Thailand but I'm not sure how that timing works out.

Anyways, if anybody has any inside tips to save time or money or headache. Lol.

Unless it's about my relationship status... Sorry, but I don't care about anyone's opinions or warnings about Thai women, but thank you. Just care about the Visa application and process.... And I know things are constantly changing also. Maybe best administration building or person to apply with. We are north of Bangkok in Pathum Thani both 48 years old..... Almost close enough to get the retirement Visa LOL. Thanks

An American expat is seeking advice on how to obtain a marriage visa for a Thai civil servant who requires university approval to marry a foreigner. The poster is concerned about the bureaucratic process, including the need for a notarized letter from the American embassy confirming their single status. They plan to apply for the Non-O marriage visa after accumulating sufficient funds and eventually moving to Thailand. Commenters provide insights ranging from personal experiences with similar situations to clarifications about the requirements for marriages involving civil servants in Thailand.

It sounds like you're overthinking things, putting the cart before the horse and getting all bent out of shape.

You won't be approved for a non o marriage visa in America if you're not married and that's what you said you were planning to do in your OP.

Here is something to think about. What happens if you get married in USA instead of in Thailand? Does that make it easier or harder?

it would take years to get her to the US to get married. K1 visas take about 1-2 years when they're not put on hold.

I arranged a marraige for my wife in Australia and she went on a tourist visa. We got married there. I assume you can marry in Las Vegas easy in the USA. In Australia we have japanese and all sorts of tourists fly in and out to get married. Has a 30 day waiting period so no Las Vegas weddings.

AI tells me. "Yes, a foreigner can legally get married in Las Vegas.Nevada has no residency, citizenship, or minimum-stay requirements for getting married. The process and requirements for foreign citizens are identical to those for U.S. citizens."

I am not saying that this is suspicious, but I have never heard of any Thai woman needing any type of permission from their employer to marry a foreigner. I think that is probably a load of rubbish. If the university has some sort of contractual agreement with her regarding employment terms, that is also another topic entirely. You WOULD need your legal documents in order to get married, but that is yet again, another completely different topic.

There are numerous occupations in the e.g. UK, US, Australia etc where permission to marry foreigners is a requirement. Why would it be so different here.

This is a requirement generally due to their security status related to their profession.

Thailand will not accept a CNI document from overseas. It has to be done at the embassy in Bangkok. In your case American; translated to Thai once stamped, then back to the embassy for approval. If all your additional paperwork is in order you can have it done and married within the week. I've just went through that process 3 weeks ago. However I was stymied by the Australian embassy because I couldn't provide the original email from the family court confirming my previous divorce. It didn't ask for that when I checked the website otherwise I could have had the email. I had everything else but they wont accept the paperwork. They want proof. In addition, my partner had to get her Thai paperwork translated to English fo.r the embassy. I'm currently in Thailand on a non visa entry. Hope this helps. We currently own a property here in Thailand.

A google AI search states the following: No, a Thai professor does not need official permission from the government or their university to marry a foreigner. Under Thai family law, professors and educators have the same freedom to marry as any other citizen, provided both parties meet standard legal requirements (such as being at least 17 years old and legally free to marry). However, depending on their specific employment status, there is one important administrative detail they might need to handle:

You are getting a lot of misinformation. I married a civil servant and she had to get prior approval. It took 4 weeks to get this but depending on her position could take up to six weeks. If you need anymore correct information then feel free to message me

Interesting. This question or questions have me curious. I hope you find a simple solution to your issue and resolve it to your satisfaction.

I'm getting my citizenship and will have to deal with going through the process of getting my wife's spouse visa. I think it will be easy, but I'm prepared for a lot of bureaucracy.

I find OPs post to be wrong. I am married to a school director, needed no permission to marry her. I am British. Embassy freedom to marry certificate, Ministry of foreign affairs, with translated docs. Then Amphur with 2 witesses, job done. Only thing i said to my wife, do not use my name, keep your Thai name/

Nalina is correct. If she is endentured to the Thai government as a condition of her scholarship, she will need to notify intent to leave country. Nothing to do with marraige., just finding out if she is trying to ditch her loan.

Thailand's Prime Minister + Thailand Interior Minister got married in time for Valentine's Day 2026 and he didn't need additional permissions from anyone

However, as a foreigner, now you will be asked additional questions and fill out a Memorandum at the local District Office before the Thai Marriage Certificate will be issued

Absolutely no additional approvals needed for a Thai Government Employee/Thai gov't University Professor/Thai gov't University Employee to get married, whether another Thai Citizen or foreigner

Sadly, after 29 years living in thailand and counseling broken down foreigners, I would believe the story is very likely a lie. lying is often part of a strategy to get funds and the foreigner is usually the cash cow that is there to milk.

Jonathan A Vickers What lying are you referring to? I am not sure I believe this story either....but it could be real. You never know.

Is she a government scholar? If so, I assume she would need to report her marriage to a foreigner because there may be concerns about her leaving Thailand and not fulfilling her scholarship obligations. But as you might expect, permission is usually granted.

This is a separate administrative process that has nothing to do with the visa application. You can handle both processes at the same time rather than waiting for approval before applying for the visa, at least that was how it worked in my case.

As for getting married in Thailand, foreigners need to provide a certificate confirming that they are legally free to marry anyway. My husband and I got married in the US and then applied for a Non-O visa so he could move to Thailand. The document translation process was quite a headache! Getting married in Thailand might have been easier, but you would still have to leave the country to apply for the Non-O visa.

P.S. cute monkey photo!

She doesn't need anything unless she's been married before. To marry in Thailand you'll need an affidavit from your Embassy that you are eligible to marry, ie proof you haven't been previously married or proof of your divorce if you have.

You're warned that this thread is going to turn bad quickly...

This doesn't pass the logic test for me. I even asked a couple Thai friends. They said they never heard of anything like this before.

She's either looking for a reason to not got married or put it off, or she needs to get divorced from her current husband first.

your information is not only offensive but totally incorrect. She needs to get a marriage to a foreigner approval first fact. The process can take up to 6 weeks fact.
Brandon ************
Brandon ************
Graham Hayes Are you talking about "freedom" to marry? Thais do not require approval from anyone to get married. That simply states that they're not already married so they can get married.

As a follow-up, I asked another friend who knows a lot about Thai government stuff, and he doesn't believe it either.
