If I were to go to Thailand to visit my fiancé and I hold a visa-exempt passport, can I get married there and then immediately apply for a marriage visa? What are the requirements? I appreciate your opinions.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Travelers on a visa-exempt passport can marry in Thailand but face challenges in applying for a marriage visa. Key points include needing a Thai bank account for visa applications and the 2-month wait after marriage for in-country visa applications. Applicants can alternatively apply for a 90-day NON-O visa at a Thai consulate abroad. Requirements for marriage include necessary documents from their home country, translation into Thai, and possibly a Certificate of No Impediment if previously married.

Thanks for the information in your first paragraph of this response. While it hasn't meant changing the way I had thought about my plan in what would be almost an identical scenario to the OP, I wasn't aware of that 2 month 'rule'. Is that 'rule' strictly adhered to across all provinces, or does it vary according to each individual Province, as some other requirements do? I did notice that you said " at any Immigration office".

If divorced make sure you bring your divorce certificate.

If previously married and divorced, I'm not sure if just a divorce certificate is sufficient. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I've read that a "Certificate of No Impediment" is required.

yes, Certificate of No Impediment is required, Divorce Certficate if applicable and all non Thai documents must be translated to Thai.

Mike Dias. If you arrive on a Visa Exempt stamp you would not be able to open a bank account in Thailand and yuou meed a bank account to apply for a marriage visa. Best to obtain a long term visa from your home country.

not right. You can get a non immigrant O visa from outside of the country without a Thai bank account. The when you enter the country you can get a Thai bank account. Anyway go to the visa portal and you will see how it works.

apply for a Non-O based on marriage to a Thai in your own country or a neighbouring country of Thailand once you're married because there is a much higher chance of opening a Thai bank account once you have the visa, if not certain.

I recently got married here, make sure you give yourself plenty of time if you do. I had to wait 6 weeks for an appointment with my embassy and the constant translation issues with the ministry of foreign affairs took another 2 weeks to sort out. Good luck.

Nope you couldn't apply in country for a 90 day Non-O visa at any immigration office in thailand until you're married a minimum of 2 months.

You could come here 60 day visa exempt, get married, then GO to a thai consulate in a nearby country and apply for the 90 day Non-O visa based on marriage to a thai because consulates don't have that "must be married 2 months" rule.

As far as the requirements, in country you'd need 400K baht in a thai bank account in your name only on the day you apply for the in country 90 Non-O and then the funds would have to have "seasoned" in your bank account for 2 months before you could apply for the year extension based on marriage after that

At a thai consulate in another country you can show proof of funds in a bank in YOUR country to meet the 400K baht or the equivalent requirement BUT you would still need to bank 400K baht in country to get the year extension at the immigration office after you came in on that 90 day Non-O visa

I'd say take it a step at a time

Get here, get the documents you need to get married from your embassy, get them translated into thai, get them certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs office, find an Amphur (city hall), go with your thai bride to be and register the marriage

THEN

decide what way you're going to go for the marriage visa/extension

Hi Tod. Sorry to hijack this post, but I wonder already quite some time For a Non imm O VISA based on mariage, is there also that age restriction of 50-plus ?

@Peter ***************
there's NO age 50 required to obtain the Non O Visa as Married to Thai.
