What are the rules regarding visa extensions when your passport is about to expire in Thailand?

A strange thing has happened during my December visit to Chonburi Immigtation. I was there with my wfe to do the yearly extension due to marriage. Because my Passport expires this August, they said only an 8 month extension is allowed and then after the new passport comes in start again.

Then they said come back January 14. Not sure why but came back and they stamped Jan. 15 on the page and above it a large stamp saying good until August 28 this year.

There was no 90-day page usually accompanied with it. I tried calling yesterday but no answer so I'm off today there, but any reason why this happened?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user experienced a situation at Chonburi Immigration where they were granted an 8-month extension on their visa due to their passport expiring in August, which is standard practice as extensions are only valid until the passport's expiration date. The absence of a 90-day report page was noted, and it was clarified by other comments that the 90-day reporting does not reset with a new extension; it remains tied to the previous reporting schedule.

They are correct. Its a years extension no 90 day visa, but you only get until the valid date of your passport if it expires first.

Many thanks to all. As I close in on 80, I'm not the man I once was.

Not strange at all ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

It's been many years now that you can only get an extension valid until your passport expires.

You got exactly the extension you were entitled to with a passport expiring less than a year from when you applied for the extension.

Now your expiration date will be Aug 28th and that's when you'll apply for a whole new yearly extension.

As far as the 90 day reporting;

Just so you're clear the 90 day reporting doesn't reset when you get a new extension <- meaning it's due what ever that date is from your previous 90 day report ๐Ÿ™‚

At Chonburi my next 90 day report date is not a further 90 days out, it finished when my extension visa stamp expires, ie I only got 70 days, no big deal, but first time this has occurred.

@Garry ******
I have seen the final 90 day report being timed to your extension expiration date at a few offices now.

I renewed my passport well before my 12 month extension embassy placed a stamp into the new passport about the visa, had no problem with immigration, I still had 6 months to go on the old passport, but I lost the 6 months on the passport, no big deal, better than having to go to immigration twice for the same thing..
