Help me understand…If A DTV is good for 5 yrs multiple entry, then why do they also say only good for 180 days? Do you really have to leave and come back twice a year?
Answer summary
A DTV (Digital Nomad Visa) allows a five-year validity with multiple entries, but each entry permits a maximum stay of only 180 days. To maintain legal status, holders typically need to leave Thailand and return after 180 days. While there are options for extensions, it generally requires re-application with updated documentation, making it simpler for many to travel briefly outside Thailand for a new entry stamp. Frequent travelers often opt for short vacations to neighboring countries like Vietnam to reset their stay rather than dealing with the complexities of extensions.

You can apply for an extension rather than leave but most will tell you the same thing. Extending is like re-applying you need all the same documentation updated since you last applied. It is far easier just to jet off somewhere for a few days. I went to Japan and next I am off to Dubai or Singapore if Iran is still angry. Just make sure to take a holiday every six months and your covered. Theoretically you can leave for just one day but if your going to leave may as well make a break of it.
Because it's essentially a tourist visa that doesn't even allow you to open a bank account, it just allows you to stay in 180-day increments for 5 years))
I sure wish USA had the guts to make a visa like this. Anyone with $15k in a bank somewhere (or a loan from mom) can apply online for a 5 YEAR visa. Would be cool.
Todd McGowan the United States does have a 10 year visa you don’t have to apply for 10 years. You’re allowed to come here every year for up to six months.
Todd McGowan I’ve been thinking of that as I pour over visa options, bank statements, proof of medical insurance, FBI background checks. We should do this in USA. In fact we do with legal immigration. Not the circus we’ve had.
Gerar Teuben I am thinking of changing my 1 year Non OA visa to DTV 5 Years. Since I still may work in Thailand. What are the implications, since I have a Kbank account?
Gerar Teuben "each entry is good for 180 days after which you have to leave " . . . . . . . . . that's WRONG. Because "after 180 days" you already are in overstay. You have to leave BEFORE the 180 days admitted day expire, not AFTER
I consider my DTV a five-year visa. Twice now, I’ve flown to Da Nang, Vietnam for the weekend, spent a few days there for a short vacation, and then returned to Thailand. Each time I re-entered, I received a new six-month stay.
Just make sure you stay on top of your 90-day reports while you’re in Thailand.
I'm the DTV visa holder too, if I staying in Thailand less 90 days, do I need to report to the Thai Immigration officer where do I staying/ living in Thailand?
Paul Franklin seems silly I make way more remote than I could locally. Im sure there's exceptions but don't really make sense to go through the process of dtv then quit for peanuts
It works the same way as any other multiple entry tourist visa. The visa is valid for 5 years and every entry during that period gets you stamped in for 180 days. Just as an METV is valid for 6 months and every entry gets you stamped for 60 days
Ant W Tailor as far as I'm aware you can extend it for a further 180 days whilst staying in Thailand, but then have to exit and re-enter for another 180 days stay, which can then be extended in the same way. Eg one 180 day extention allowed for each entry into Thailand. So for the 5 years, in theory you would only have to leave 4 times for a few days holiday.
Neville Young not worth even trying to extending. Immigration will make it so difficult that by the time you succeed, if you do at all, you'll know next time to just leave and return instead
Ant W Tailor Don’t you need to qualify though? Not just the financial requirement but must be able to show remote work, a cooking class or Muay Thai course.
