January 2026 marks the 180th day of my DTV visa stay. Do I have to leave for a few days and then come back again, or can I extend my stay at the immigration office? Apparently, a lot of changes have been made recently for foreigners.

TLDR : Answer Summary
As you approach the 180-day limit on your DTV visa, there are options for managing your stay. While it's theoretically possible to apply for a 180-day extension at an immigration office in Thailand, many expats find this process burdensome and often not worth the hassle. It's generally recommended to exit the country and re-enter to receive another full 180-day period. Some have experienced strict enforcement at immigration, with reports suggesting a re-entry might need to be outside Thailand for at least 48 hours to avoid issues. Overall, planning a short trip abroad is viewed as the more practical solution.

Extend with 1900 baht and then you're obligate to pay taxes from income

I Know Almost Everything you're never "obligated" to pay taxes. It depends on whether you remitted money and most importantly, what the Dual Tax Agreement between your country and Thailand dictates. If you're already paying a bunch of taxes in your country, it's almost certain you'll have no taxes to pay here (as per the DTA rules). Of course rules are very different by country. I'm not a pensioner, but I've heard that in some cases the pension money is taxed twice and some cases isn't.

In theory you can get one 180 day extension at an immigration office inside Thailand but you need absolutely everything updated to the current point including 500k baht in a bank account for 30 days, and even then immigration make it difficult. Much easier to leave and return

I went to do my 90-day report a few weeks ago and the woman at the immigration office said to me ‘next 90 day you need to go out and come back in’. She didn’t even entertain the idea of an extension.

The changes you are referring to are for people coming in visa-exempt, not DTV holders (although they might be more strict on everyone I guess)

Travel away for a nice short break, who wants to pay B1900 to sit in an immigration office.

Immigration dont want anything to do with it so the likelihood of extending in country is low. If you can you've got to prove everything again that you did to get the visa.

Officially (legally) you can stay inside , realistically it is absolutely not recommend. Make sure you leave via airplane and stay out the kingdom for at least 48 hours to not get any problems. Many reported getting yelled at below 48 hours , some say might even be denied entry. Don’t ask for logic , it doesn’t have any

Anonymous participant 372 There is logic. The DTV was a comedy troll by Taksin to troll his enemies that lets the oiks they've spent years trying to keep out live here for 5 years. They are making it difficult in response.

💯. And contrary to what many people say, there aren’t many confirmed rules/confirmed benefits for DTV, which makes it very flexible, immigration can interpret the benefits and rules however they want.

You can extend in country but it's not work the hassle. A trip in and out will do. You don't need to wait to that day, BTW, can travel this weekend or next week. You'll get 180 days upon each entry.
