What are the requirements for obtaining a volunteer visa in Thailand, and do you need a work permit for long-term volunteering?

What are the guidelines/requirements for a volunteer visa here - and do you still need a work permit if you come in to volunteer longterm. I posted earlier about switching my dependent o visa to a non-immigrant b visa so I can apply for a work permit but actually it looks like it's not going to be a paid job, so I'm wondering if this changes my visa options.

TLDR : Answer Summary
To apply for a volunteer visa in Thailand, you typically require a Non-Immigrant O visa specifically for volunteering and a work permit, which necessitates paperwork from the organization providing the volunteering opportunity. Often, you may need to leave the country to obtain this visa. If you are looking to switch from a Dependent O visa to a Volunteer O visa, it’s important to check whether this change can be processed in-country.

99.9% of the time you have to leave the country to get a volunteer visa.

So do you know if I have to leave the country to change my current dependent o visa (based on my husband's job) to a new volunteer o visa (with work permit allowed). . . .or can this be done in-country?

As far as I know when I enquired you still need a work permit to volunteer. The easiest way is to get an organization to sponsor you,

You can look at the avi website they do a lot of volunteer work in Asia

Great, thanks for clarifying this.

I would still make the trip to the immigration office, or better yet, have the place you're going to volunteer at call them and ask if you can change the reason for your extension from dependent to volunteer inside the country.

You're not changing ANY visa, only the reason for your extension.

OK thanks! Sorry for asking a similar question twice - just wanted to make sure the rules weren't different for volunteer visas!

I would imagine you cannot do it in country and you would first go cancel your extension based on being a dependent of someone's extension, then take the documentation from where ever it is that you're going to volunteer and go to a thai consulate in another country and buy a 90 day Non-O visa.

I say that because I have personally never ever heard of it being done. I'd say take a trip to your local immigration office to be sure (and report back on what they say if you would)

To volunteer you need the Work Permit and the Non Immigrant O visa based on volunteer. The organization that offered you the job need to give you the paperwork needed to apply for the Visa and apply for the work permit.
