Has anyone applied for the DTV (workcation) through the Thai Embassy in Canberra recently?

Hey all,

Has anyone applied for the DTV (workcation) through the Thai Embassy in Canberra recently?

I spoke to a visa advisory service and they recommend holding the 500,000 THB for 3 months before applying. My funds are a recent lump sum from a redundancy (I have the separation letter) which well exceed the required amount. Did anyone apply with a shorter period, or did Canberra ask for the full 3 months?

Also, I teach English online for a non thai-based company (overseas students, never any Thai students). I was told online teaching can be seen as a weaker remote-work case. Has anyone applied on that basis through Canberra, and how did it go?

And if you went the soft power route with a Thai cooking or cultural course in Chiang Mai, which one did you use?

Thanks in advance.
Answer summary
This post discusses personal experiences and advice related to applying for the DTV (workcation) visa at the Thai Embassy in Canberra. Key points include requirements for demonstrating financial stability, particularly holding the required 500,000 THB for three months, although some applicants have been successful with shorter periods when providing adequate documentation. The validity of online teaching as a form of remote work was also explored, with suggestions on necessary proof. The conversation also touches on soft power options, specifically cooking courses in Chiang Mai, highlighting popular schools that offer support letters for the visa.

In Canberra, they do prefer three months history but many recent cases got approved with lump sum when they showed redundancy letter plus payslips and bank note explaining source. Keep funds steady in account from now, show balance well above five hundred thousand baht and attach separation letter with English translation if needed.

Online teaching for overseas students can pass if you show company contract, teaching platform income, and letter that no Thai students are taught and work is fully remote. Canberra likes clear freelance proof, tax docs and website of employer help a lot. For soft power route, Chiang Mai cooking schools like Thai Farm Cooking School and Smile Organic Farm are often used and accepted, pick one with DTV support letter and long course.

You could consider reading a book or two before your trip. I’d recommend Unlock Thailand by Isla Rey on Amazon, it includes all the info and insights you need. You should check it out. A very good companion 👌.

Re: the teaching its mainly japanese students I've never taught a Thai student but its an international platform and they have students from Vietnam Taiwan and China so ye that one could prove to be tricky...I dont think the platform will provide me a statement stating no thai students..tricky one that one. The visa agency I spoke to said that teaching is considered a weak option for workation. I'd be interestd to learn if anyone has been approved this way...Ye lol let's see what happens I think i just answered my own question lol.

I’m in a similar situation Mar.

I have had my funds in there since 26th sep, and I will be applying on 30th November as we are due to fly on 31st December.

I’ve called them and they go off the closing balance for each statement. So technically I can give them a statement from first of the month till last of the month for sep, oct, Nov and if the closing balance is 500,000 that will suffice.

In regards to work / soft power, I have decided to go soft power and am considering Arun cooking school. Once I book I can let you know. I will have my income support documents as well just in case.

Fingers crossed they can process it before Christmas holiday period

Use search including Embassy name, you are asking questions that has been answered numerous times.

Read the resident Embassy website thoroughly, since it will solve most questions, and use the manual in the top right corner of the website you apply at.

The money deposit is one of the major requirements, and the full amount should have been in the personal account in the required time, which depends on which Embassy is used.

it was over 2 years ago when I applied, but there was no requirement for 'seasoned' funds at that time. I have read elsewhere that 10 days is fine, but they may still want to see 3 months of statements.
