Question about DTV + Dependent application (housewife as main applicant)

Hi everyone! I’m applying for a DTV under the study category (1-year cooking course), and my husband and child will apply as my dependents. Would love some clarity on the financial documents!

- I’m a housewife — no income

- We plan to live on savings for the year

- I’ll submit 3-month bank statements showing 500,000+ baht in my account

My questions:

1. Do I also need a sponsorship letter from my husband stating he supports me financially ( as I have no income) — even though he’s applying as my dependent?

2. It feels a bit circular: financially I depend on him, but visa-wise he depends on me — does this setup make sense to the embassy? Has anyone done this?

3. Should I include my husband’s bank statements in my DTV application as supplementary proof of funds?

4. If yes, will he then need to submit those same bank statements again when he applies for his dependent visa?

5. When my husband and child submit their dependent visa applications, does that mean 500,000 baht x 2 ppl is required in my husband’s account?

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Any experience or advice is much appreciated! 🙏
Answer summary
The inquiry revolves around applying for a DTV visa under a cooking course while the main applicant is a housewife lacking income. Key concerns include the necessity of a financial sponsorship letter from the husband, whether his bank statements should be included, and the implications of their financial setup on the application process. Respondents highlight the complexities of their situation, suggesting alternative options to strengthen their application and emphasizing the importance of demonstrating adequate financial support for both the applicant and dependents during their stay in Thailand.

I think it’s important to first decide where you’re going to apply. The embassy or consulate you choose is just as important as deciding which type of DTV you want to apply for, since different embassies establish different rules.

The way you want to do it could be confusing and might lead to a rejection.

It doesn’t really make sense for him to be your dependent and also work. Under a tourist-related visa, a person can only work if they have a DTV Workation. But we do have specialists here who can confirm whether that’s correct.

What could be done more safely:

• You apply through a course and show an amount higher than 1 million baht, then include your husband as a dependent and later your child. Just rely on the financial amount required for 2 people (or ideally 3).

• You apply for one course and he applies for another one, and then include the child in one of the two applications. If you have sufficient funds and he does too, it’s very likely to be approved, since that’s the correct way to apply if neither of you is going to work.

Some applicants may also do freelance or remote part-time work outside of Thailand not for Thai market, to help support their soft power application. In many cases, having a combination of supporting factors can make the application stronger.

For DTV applications, applicants are effectively competing with others applying under the same visa category. Stronger applications usually include better financial evidence, clearer supporting documents, and a more logical overall explanation of the applicant’s plans in Thailand.

Relying on only one reason for the application is often weaker than presenting a well-supported combination. However, the soft power activity must remain the main purpose of the DTV application — not the other way around.

Another issue we often see concerns 12-month courses. Many Thai embassies only clearly recognize the initial 180-day entry and stay period under the DTV visa. Extensions or exit-and-reentry options are never guaranteed, so embassies usually do not consider them as part of the official application logic.

Because of this, applicants should be prepared to clearly explain:

- how they will financially support themselves during their stay,

- why the course duration makes sense,

- and how their plans fit within the currently guaranteed visa period.

Correct, working remotely if you apply via soft power is allowed, legally.

I agree you can't tell why because they rightly don't provide a reason. Which is why, in my view, it's the underlying Thai laws that are important and not which consulate allows this and which doesn't

Yes, it is possible, and on this point we agree.

However, when an application is rejected, nobody can say the exact reason with certainty because neither you nor we personally reviewed the applicant’s documents first-hand. In many cases, rejections happen because the Thai embassy does not believe the overall logic of the application, or because the provided documents do not fully meet the requirements. Ultimately, the decision is entirely within the rights and authority of the Thai embassy.

Moreover, we believe that because many agents and self-applicants started submitting as many additional supporting documents as possible, certain Thai embassies have gradually begun treating these extra documents as a kind of “gold standard” for stronger DTV visa applications and approvals.

yes I've seen it been included too, but I believe that is down to a misinterpretation of the law by some consulates. I've also seen applications being rejected when people included work income to support their applications

We respectfully believe this interpretation may be misleading in the context of the DTV visa.

The “Work of Alien Act” and the conditions of the DTV visa are not always interpreted in a simple or identical way, especially regarding remote or online activities performed for overseas clients or companies while staying in Thailand.

At this time, there is still no completely clear or universally enforced framework specifically addressing every form of remote work under the DTV Soft Power category. Because of this, many applicants choose to show additional financial support, freelance income, remote business activity, or overseas employment as part of their overall application logic and financial stability.

We are not giving legal advice, and we always encourage applicants to consult official sources or qualified legal professionals if they require legal certainty. However, based on real DTV applications and approvals we have seen, remote income and freelance activity have commonly been included as supporting financial evidence.

real time first hand experience from our customer right now in Ho Chi Minh apply under Soft Power DTV Program Thai Cooking 6 months course. We not sure they ask him proof that he can support himself that he has remote work right ? Or it's misleading?

please tell this to some embassies, not just in Vietnam, but in Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia ets 555 Why they officially requesting this as mandatory for DTV visa soft power approval!?

We are very sorry, but we only specialize in the DTV visa category. We do not provide advice regarding other visa types because we do not have direct experience in those areas, and we believe it would be unprofessional to recommend something outside of our expertise.

Our advice is always based on real first-hand experience from actual DTV applications and outcomes, not only theory or sales recommendations for long-term courses.

Every applicant’s situation is different, and we always encourage people to rely on practical experience, official requirements, and realistic application logic when preparing their documents.

@Sky **************
the official requirement for the DTV is that if you want to work remotely from Thailand you apply using the Workation option
Luit *****************

Officially there need to be 500K for each applicant, but some embassies do not ask for children.

If you both are unemployed, embassie might ask for extra funds to show you can live from savings, because the 500K is only meant as an emergency fund.

best and accurate answer from all. Thank you 👍

This makes no sense. How can your husband support you if he won't work while in Thailand. If he will work while in Thailand he needs to apply under the Workation option to legally do so, then you can apply as his wife.

Anonymous participant 741 Thanks for all your input. Would it make more sense to state that I’m unemployed (instead of housewife), since I’m not dependent on my husband’s income the coming year?

Anonymous participant 741 💯 about support for 5 years and proof of employment or stable income or must be life savings be triple enough to support all this.. Vietnam does not have a lottery, if it is perfectly answered all of them extra requests positive approval is highly likely possible.

Anonymous participant I see you're planning on applying to HCMC. They will probably ask you how you will support yourself for 5 years. Regardless if you put employed or not. It's a bit of a lottery applying in Vietnam recently.

Looks to me like it's his savings but she will be doing the course. Nothing wrong with that.
