What are the options for getting a DTV Soft Power visa in Thailand if interested in lighter Muay Thai or cooking courses?

Hi there,

I have read a lot of posts about the DTV, old and new version but still have questions.

I intend to ask for a DTV Soft power and am hesitating between Muay Thai and Cooking courses.

But to be fair, the boxing programmes are way too intensive (since I do intend to follow them but I don't want to go every weekday to the gym) and the cooking classes are not really interesting for me.

1- Have some of you found schools that provide lighter Muay Thai programmes?

2- Also I am searching for courses on Koh Chang, which doesn't help at all, I am quite aware of that. I already contacted two Muay Thai schools but I don't have a lot of hope since the island is quite small. If anyone knows about a culinary school that is accredited on KC, that would be great.

3- Are there really no other options? I understand that Thai language classes is a no go, but there are other items listed on the Embassy website (I would be submitting from Paris, France) like festivals, trainings, sports activities... Has anyone ever tried another activity... successfully?

I apologise for the very specific questions but I don't want to invest time and energy in a course that I won't be able to finish or, worse, can get hurt if I follow it by the letter. I would love to have your comments, whether you got your DTV before or after the 31st of August.

Thank you!

Maïssa Bey: You write that you have decided to apply for a DTV and have selected two possible 'soft power' activities but are not particularly interested in either of them. So why, really, you want a DTV if you don't want to do things for which the DTV is intended?

Jeffrey A Hynds - I am afraid there was a misunderstanding. I did say I am not interested in cooking classes, especially for a six-month period, but I am in Muay Thai. The difference is I don't intend to practise boxing every day since it's quite physical and I might sustain an injury if the programme is too intensive. Which happened already in the past. Does that make more sense to you?

it seems to me that you want to get the visa but but for a reason other than attending to any Soft Power activity. Keep in mind that it's a five year visa and even if you book a 6 months course, after your innitial course expires you should continue the Soft Power actvity until the visa expires. If you visa is based o Soft Power and you don't have any ongoing course, you can get denied entry because you are not fulfilling your visa conditions anymore

you should apply for the right visa which matches your purpose. In your case, you should apply for an ED visa

- Thank you for your comment. The truth is I wanted to learn Thai and planned to register through this activity until I discovered it's almost always rejected for DTV. I still intend to take classes even if it's not accepted by the authorities. So you're right, I am chosing an activity that was not my first choice but that I still like so it's alright. But if, thanks to other contributors, I can find a Thai language course organisation, I will most likely register with it. 😃

There is a culture program in chiang mai called ‘TSL’ that offers a soft power DTV. I know of a person who got a DTV with a six month culture class there. Google TSL and take a look at the website - there may be something in Bangkok & Phuket but I highly doubt Koh Chang, but still you never know?

- Thank you for the lead! That would be great since Thai Language courses really was the activity I wanted the DTV for! That would be worth spending some time in Chiang Mai really... 🥰

When I took my driving test last year there were a few from TSL on the Ed visa taking theirs. They spoke highly of the school.

hi, can I kindly ask you which course you purchased from TSL & the duration? I will be doing the same thing for my DTV application & this information can be very useful to me. You can DM me if it’s perhaps a bit personal.

- Nice! I'm checking it right now (but the Thai Herbs and Plants could be very useful when you intend to move a bit). You give great tips, thanks! :)

You’re welcome. I moved to chiang mai since my dad retired here. I’m going to apply for a DTV soft power through this culture class at TSL in December. I’m going to go see them this week.

The Thai Herbs and Plants course is distance learning but only gets approved by certain embassies. If I remember correctly the school worked with Siam Legal. Maybe contact them.

why would you book an online course and stay in Thailand on a 5 year visa since you can as well do them from home?

- It's perfect! They provide classes in Chanthaburi, which is so close to Koh Chang! I am just waiting for confirmation that my embassy is ok with this type of curriculum so... fingers crossed! You are a life saver! 😍

Remember to only search for answers, that are specific to the Embassy you will apply at.

Answers from other countries will be inaccurate.

- I try to pay attention to that, yes. I am currently contacting schools and asking them if they have any data regarding their success rate with the French Embassy. 🤞
