TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the current and upcoming visa extension regulations for foreigners in Thailand, particularly in light of recent changes and updates. There's mention of the grace period for visa extensions and specific deadlines when proper visas or extensions will be required, with references to an article on the Bangkok Post outlining these rules. Comments also touch upon air travel options related to Ethiopian Airlines and Korean Air.

Hey,
@Positively ******
, what is so "easy to understand" about something that was published nearly two weeks ago? Seriously?

Before Sept 26 however everyone who is not already on overstay is good.

Proper visa or extension will be needed by Sept 26 if things passed by the cabinet are the same as what is in this article.

I think it's silly to apply for a 30 day visa extension when they are giving a "grace period" that exceeds 30 days
Ivan ******
@Rich *******
We need to wait how it's going to be regulated. Anyway, proper visa is needed to stay in any case.

@Acor *****
no it's not

As of July 6...

Why won't the embassy issue 'letters' to immigration for extenuating circumstances? Isn't it 'safer' in Thailand?
Christophe **********
Yes the double standard on allowing people to stay. USA allows illegals with children, no money to stay and houses and feeds them. You will never find that in Thailand

. Australia and the UK are the same, but let's be realistic. Most people would prefer to have the Thai policies in their own countries, so let's not introduce our own double standards. When all is said and done, very few of us are permanent in Thailand. We are only as good as the next "admitted until" stamp in our passports
Bobby ********
Australia and NZ embassies are now issuing letters requesting extension, so the others might start following suit, although it's almost impossible at this stage to return to Australia as they're only admitting 350 people a day. I think any animosity from long stay visa holders is towards the tourist visa holders, not the holders of O and B visas who live and have families here. They are victims of this crazy Thai visa process where you are required to leave the country and re-enter albeit for five minutes, for a process which could be done at an in country immigration office. In defence of

, although I may not always agree with everything he says (and conversely he with me!), his comments are always level headed and based on facts, and certainly doesn't show any animosity towards "amnestees". The bottom line is there's two weeks to the end of amnesty. The Thais are more than aware of the difficulty of flights home, they are not going to bring in any draconian measures and start arresting and fining overstayers. They are also more than aware that there are plenty of Thai citizens still stuck in other countries and we could easily start tit for tat.

Interesting Mogens that you see yourself in that description, I didn't mention you anywhere.

The US Embassy in Thailand has always had an unwritten policy to not help it's citizens!

it's possible.

Also, I wonder what's the 'fetish' of many to have expats return home which seems to go beyond COVID.
Garrett ***********
@Dan***
The letter says you can't go back to your country. You can though, flights everyday. If you don't feel "safe" in the US that's your problem, not Thailand's and not the US embassies.

don’t feel safe in country back home, don’t feel safe travelling back home, don’t want to take whats now a tougher journey, muiltiple flights, mask wearing, no refreshments etc. why not a lettter of ‘support’ if requested. UK same. I can in December with the intention of long stay, hadn’t decided on location before COVID struck.

@Garrett **********
in Daniels defence, with the first round of letters given, I think most people COULD have still found a flight or combination of flights home. It is still, today, just as difficult and unsafe to expect any human to make that journey, than before the shut down, if not essential. I understand the rules and limits of visas. But it is evident that thai immigration have relaxed a bit with regards visas. This would be more the case if you can prove your financial means of staying, (which nobody has ever asked me actually) and there is no actual need for you to return to you country, and your government can’t make you go against your will, the Thai immigration seem to have even ‘invited’ letters embassies, then why the refusal ?
Daniel *******
@Garrett **********
wow. It's not just me. And there are many possible reasons one can't return to their country.
Ivan ************
@Dan***
I don't think he's coming at it from that point of view, I agree too many expats seem to get off on that but I don't think
@Gar****
is like that. He's not old and bitter enough yet. He's just explaining their position.
Garrett ***********
@Dan***
I'm not singling you out, don't take everything so personally. I'm talking from the perspective of the government. Thailand doesn't take American "refuges." Not liking your home country isn't a reason for the government to change their immigration rules.
Daniel *******
@Garrett **********
but I don't take it personally.
Ivan ************
I guess it is because they feel they would have to lie and say there are no flights back to the US, when there are flights back to the US.

In any case, it is looking very likely that there will be a further "grace period" allowed, to 26 September.

Ethiopian Airlines flies to the US? I'm not sure about other cities, but for Seattle you can only get there via Korean Air at the moment. So if they cancel on you..... good luck.
