TLDR : Answer Summary
There have been no recent successes reported regarding the ability to open bank accounts with a DTV visa in Thailand. Current consensus among community members suggests that due to recent crackdowns, it is unlikely for tourists and holders of DTVs or ED visas to open bank accounts, and even if one is opened, the risk of account closure is high. Alternatives like international bank accounts are being recommended.
I forgot about this. Now even if they allow I would not do it.
I just go to Krunsgri and withdraw 30 000 baths anytime I need and I pay for the 220 bahts which seem to have become 250 recently. This is like the price of one pizza

If you are able to open a Charles Schwab investor checking account in your country and have someone mail you the card, I highly recommend it.
No foreign transaction fees on their end and worldwide ATM fees reimbursed each month. Especially useful in Thailand with those 220 baht fees.
And for anyone who didn't know this, always select "no" when the ATM asks if you want to proceed with their conversion. It's more expensive that way.

Nope... not yet.

Not heard of anyone opening one recently either agent or alone.

It's just another way of making money by making you spend using your international credit card so that the banks can earn fees

Why do you need a bank account ? You are just temporary here. Your visa is not considered a long term one.

Anonymous participant 448 it's already been mentioned but that you think 5 years is temporary is pretty wild. Like I get that it's a"temporary visa" but let's not act like people who are applying for it are only planning on spending 3 months in Thailand and going home.
This visa is not considered long term. Thus the impossibility to open a bank account. That says it all. Central Bank of Thailand (which made this regulation) knows things we don’t know … Example: are you sure you can apply for another DTV after the initial 5 years ?

Anonymous participant 448 I'm aware of the rule. I literally noted it in my reply so thanks for repeating what I already said and ignoring the point I made?
Am I sure I can apply for the DTV again in 2030? How many things should I be sure about in 2030? Lol come on.

Anonymous participant 448 if they are going to spend the best part of 5 years in a country then a local bank account could be very useful and save them significant amounts

Anonym deltagare 448 Yes why would someone that plans to spend up to 5 years in a country need a local bank account?
It’s very convenient to have a thai bank account. I don’t understand these people that has made it their mission to convince other that there is no benefit to have a thai bank account.

I think you can forget about it for quite some time. They just have made it clear that tourists, DTVs, EDs will not be able to open an account anymore. And if you even manage to do so, the risk of closure is high.
