What are the current reporting requirements for O-X visa holders in Thailand?

ORIGINAL POSTER
I have been on an OX retirement visa for over a year, and just went to immigration to do my 90 day report as usual. But this time I was told that I don't have to do this every 90 days on the OX visa, I only have to do it once a year. Has this changed recently?

So he gave me a Receipt of Notification saying that the next notification is due on 7 October 2025, which is one year after my previous 90 day report. That's a little odd, he seems to have tried to correct the previous report by backdating it, but you would think it should be either one year from my entry or one year from now. Whatever his logic was, that's the date on my receipt now.

I will be leaving the country and coming back in April, and he explicitly said I only have to report again a year after my re-entry.

I just tried to find information on the web about whether things have changed, and read there is some requirement to do a "qualification check" every year, which I've never heard of before, and haven't done since I first entered on my visa 20 months ago. It doesn't really make sense as every time I enter I get stamped in for 5 more years. Is this qualification check something new too? What conditions need to be met to qualify, and what happens if I don't qualify? Do they cancel the visa even though I still have a valid entry stamp?

I suspect the immigration officer misinterpreted something and I do still need to do the 90 day report every 90 days. It seems the OX visa is uncommon and many immigration officers are unsure what the rules are. For example, I've never once received the correct date on my entry stamp, which should always be 5 years from the date of entry.

My attempt to google for answers has only raised more questions. It suspect there is no need for any qualification check, otherwise they would have demanded it when I went to do my last couple of 90 day reports.

Could someone please explain what the rules are? Should I go to immigration 90 days after I re-enter Thailand? Or can I wait at least until October 7 which is printed on my current Receipt of Notification, even though that is for my current entry?

Thanks for your help.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user, an O-X visa holder, reports conflicting information regarding the necessity of 90-day reporting to immigration in Thailand. Traditionally, O-X visa holders are required to submit these reports every 90 days. However, during the user's recent visit, an immigration officer indicated that they now only need to report once a year, which prompted confusion and suspicion regarding a possible misunderstanding about a new qualification check and other visa rules. Comments from other users generally confirm that the 90-day reporting is still required for O-X visas, suggesting that the immigration officer's guidance may have been incorrect.

I am a long timer on a retirement visa. I was told for my last 90 day report that I was already in the system and didn't need to come back. The officer even seemed slightly annoyed that I returned to report it again. I am still puzzled from the encounter. I think with the influx of new expats they are overwhelmed. I am going to do my report regardless simply to play it safe.
Why****
I love Thailand, I REALLY Love Thailand. I have spent many years there since 1990. But...

...all this Visa confusion, miss interpretation, multiple answers of unsureity, miss information from public threads AND even from authorities within the immigration office itself is exactly why I'm spending less and less time in Thailand. Myself and others

True story.

My advice is NEVER EVER trust an embassy website about ANYTHING to do with things INSIDE thailand

AND

NEVER EVER trust an immigration office/officer with ANYTHING to do with visas OUTSIDE thailand

I pulled that wellington consulate info because it's 100% wrong and I don't know a single person on an OX who ever got a new 5 year stamp when they came back in

That's not how the visa works

It's exactly as I explained, you get a 5 year stamp for the FIRST entry and then every time you exit/re-enter you get stamped in until that date again.

AND

you can indeed get an in country 5 year extension (just like I mentioned by showing 3 million thai baht in a bank account and having the mandatory health insurance) <- the proof of funds is why no one ever gets the in country extension.

I should have also said. An O-X visa holder has to report yearly to immigration for your banked money and health insurance to be checked, this is probably what confused the IO
Tod *********
@David *******
that is rarely enforced by ANY immigration office and most people just burn the 5 years down and get a new visa

I am going through this now in Bangkok, they noticed last year when transferring my stamp to new passport that I had not been checking in yearly it took 5 hours while they checked the previous years bank and health insurance, lucky I took everything with me, and told me off for not doing the yearly checks even though they told ne when I first arrived just come back in 5 years and get second 5 year stamp, went back recently to do it, they said no, you need a new police record from you home country as well as original statements showing money came from Uk, etc etc, a helpful supervisor came to speak with me, said best leave country come back in 60 day exempt and apply non O

I give that officer three thumbz up (y) (y) (y)

Just run this 5 year stamp down, bounce out/back to get off it and on to a 60 day free entry stamp THEN apply for the in country 90 day Non-O visa for 2000baht and after you get that apply for the year extension for 1900baht

@Tod ********
Yes leaving shortly, one thing this supervisor said was that the retirement visa, will change early next year and she did not think I would be able to get health insurance for an O-X visa, looks like they are going to kill it off with the coming changes

@David *******
you shouldn't have even GONE to immigration to transfer your stamp ๐Ÿ™ you weren't on an extension you were just on an entry stamp FROM a valid visa. You should have just exited showing both passports and then come back in with both and they'd have stamped you out and back in on the new passport referencing the VISA in the old one.

I'm actually surprised they even transferred an entry stamp only to a new passport. (as you'd still need the visa in the old passport to get in/out of the country)

To my knowledge no one has EVER gotten a 5 year extension on an OX visa, not at any immigration office in the country ever ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

I got told the same for my DTV no need to do 90 days, TM30 is enough, just need to renew at 180 days! Seems a change is in the air with the 90 day reporting...
Wannikea *********
@Lee **********
comparing apples, oranges, and durian. DTV is a tourist class visa, OA OX are non Imm category long stay visas. Regardless, 90 day reports are mandatory with both types.
Lee ***********
@Wannikea ********
regardless, the Thai Immigration control matters of reporting, then are we not to follow their advice and rules! Regardless of which fruit or its restraints were all talking about 90 days and confusion over information given, are we not
Wannikea *********
@Lee **********
let's keep it simple, because this thread is about a somewhat obscure visa and who knows about the officers experience with it. That said, it's no skin off of anybody's butt to do an extremely simple 90 day report if you've been in the country 90 consecutive days. 99.99% of people here have to do it.
Tod *********
Sadly
@Lee **********
that is NOT the topic of this thread ๐Ÿ™

you were told wrong a Destination Thailand Visa DOES require 90 day reporting.

The only one that doesn't is the LTR (Long Term Resident) visa
Lee ***********
@Tod ********
sorry Tod, but it kind of is, yes different visa, but the topic is the 90 day reporting.

I went to the immigration office, asked requirements for 90 day reporting and was told to wait for the senior.

The IO came, spoke English and explained exactly that 90 day report is not needed.

It OK people saying on groups that thai immigration are wrong, we can't force them, we are guests in their country and we oxide by what they say.
Tod *********
@Lee **********
it's because the immigration office/officer wasn't dialed in about the DTV, many MANY many people who hit 90 days on DTV's have indeed shown up at their immigration office and done 90 day reporting
Lee ***********
@Tod ********
I understand and I'm ready to do so, but, we can't force immigration to complete paperwork can we!
Graham ******
Just do your 90 day report online every 75 to 80 days. If it's accepted you're fine, if it's not accepted follow the instructions with the rejection.

Good info Martin

I just joined as a friend forwarded this post re OX & 90 days.

I received my OX in 2021 and only been on short visits since. To me it is a lottery as to what date they stamp for me.

(Apologies to Admin if this comment is outside of guidelines for this group - Iโ€™m new to the group)
David ********
I have an O-X visa and have to do 90 day reports. The IO is wrong only the LTR visa let's you report once a year
Brad *******
Go back to immigration and get the correct story. Conflicting comments donโ€™t clarify this and itโ€™s very important. Iโ€™m with the folks on 90 days is the requirement but donโ€™t risk it, just talk with the officials
Lotta ******************
Not to contradict tod Daniels, the one person I know who has the same ox visa, also has to do his report once a year (and he has had it for some time already so has done more than one report)
Tod *********
@Lotta *****************
I have heard that some provinces did that too

BUT the real rule is OX is not exempt from 90 day reporting ONLY the LTR (Long Term Resident) visa has the "yearly reporting"
Heinz ***********
@Tod ********
What about the DTV?
Tod *********
@Heinz **********
DTV does do 90 day reporting just like everyone else (except the LTR)
Ellie *******
@Lotta *****************
, the information released says 90-day report is required for Non-OX holders.

Actually, some provincial offices say every 90 days, some offices say once a year. You need to be careful on your own.
Tod *********
Okay, there is no rule change on the OX visa and it has the same 90 day reporting requirements as an OA visa and/or people on extensions inside the country. I have no idea what that officer is on about.

So there is definitely a mistake on that receipt.

IF you indeed filed a 90 day report on 7th Oct 2024 you are due for one on the 4th of Jan 2025 (no matter what that paper says) ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Then when you travel, when you come back that you file a new TM30 and then do your 90 day report on time (89 days from the date you stamp back in)

You misunderstand how the OX visa works, you don't get a new 5 year entry stamp every time you come in to the country you should get stamped in with the same expiration date as you did the FIRST time you came in to the country.

It's not a 'get a new 5 years every entry' sort of visa.. It's a get ONE 5 year entry, and get that expiration date for the next 5 years you exit/re-enter the country.

After that if you want to get a 5 year extension on that visa you meet the requirements inside the country at the immigration office (3 million thai bank in a bank account/mandatory 100K USD health insurance, etc) and apply for it

Just for your information, I don't know even a single person who got an OX visa who ever got a 5 year extension on one not even ONE person.

The auzzies who used to get those from Sydney almost for the asking would just get the 5 years out of the visa, then go back and get another one.

So if you're being stamped in until the original entry stamp expiration date you're getting stamped in correctly

The IO might be confusing the OX with the LTR
