TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses recent changes in immigration regulations in Thailand, particularly concerning the requirement for foreigners, including those on retirement visas, to show a minimum of 20,000 baht in cash. There are mixed opinions about the enforcement of this rule, with commenters sharing their experiences and concerns about potential impacts on long-term residents and tourists. Some express worry that stricter regulations could discourage foreigners from visiting or living in Thailand.

Colin - to cut through the clutter, I have read hundreds and hundreds of posts and thousands of comments on visa related boards and groups...
I have not read of one report where at a Thai Border Checkpoint / Border Crossing that an I/O or an Immigration Officer at an airport asking any foreigner who comes to Thailand holding an O-A Long Stay Visa or someone who is entering on a 90 day O Visa or B Visa or anyone on an Extension of Stay based on being over age 50/Retirement to show 20,000 Baht cash or any other financial evidence.
These report only apply to people who come to enter Thailand on Tourist Visas or Exemptions for not having a visa or those who enter on Visa on Arrival.
It does not seem to apply to those on Multi-Entry Tourist Visas who are doing an out and back in to get another 60 day stay under the terms of the METV...

David N Viscuso maybe i wasn't clear... i left 10k + eur a month in order to live in bkk... not in singa, not in HK, in macao, taipei, buriram or koh lipe.... in BKK..... i love big cities, not the sea, and bkk is the world best one for me.....
David ************
You should get out of the city. It's much better on a beach down south.
i left my work in switzerland (more than 10k eur/month) in order to live in bkk.... i'm 37 and travelled in 76 countries... is this enough to explain how much i like this city?

It's a bit ridiculous that they refuse people the opportunity to go to an atm...
It's like anything else. There's a law against j-walking in the us. 98% of the time you won't get called out on it but if you do, live with it because it's a law and you just broke it. Not saying it's good or bad but it's there.

Clamp down on illegal work by much higher punishments, thousends of Loas, Cambodian and Birmese people without proper paperworks run back to their home country. Others just hop over the border and come back on a new bought Tourist Visa, well in either way Thailand want foreigners to bring in the money and not run around here and work and gain money illegally.
Ron *******
Be very aware that ANYBODY can be asked to show the funds in cash or travellers cheques.
Stephen *******
People on extensions with re-entry permits have already shown 400,000 or 800,000 baht, so not them.
Lloyd ********
Not if you are on an extension and using a re-entry permit.

Sorry Colin , you've lost me , are you saying you have arrived in Thailand with a ' retirement ' long stay ' visa ' .. no immigration are asking you to show them 20,000 bht in thai cash ??
Or you've just arrived on a m
Normal 30 day 'free visa ' and you must show them 20,000 bht ? ..
Steven ***********
It's been a stipulation for a long time however never enforced. It seems now that they're clamping down on everything and looking for excuses not to let people in.....this being one perfect excuse.
