What are the blood donation requirements in Thailand for expats, particularly for Rh Negative individuals?

Dec 31, 2022
Most blood donation centers have removed the COVID one-year residency requirement and do not require residency at all.

Rh Negative is extremely rare in the Thai population. A needle in the haystack.

00.3% of Thais and

15.2% of Western Foreigners are Rh Negative.

If you are Rh Negative, please donate. It must come from expats in Emergencies.

Donation Criteria for the National Blood Center in Bangkok can be found on

Please donate and save a life.

Location of National Blood Center in Bangkok:

1871 Henri Dunant Rd, Pathum Wan, Bangkok 10330. Near Sam Yan Metro.

* We understand that Chiang Mai Red Cross still maintains the residency requirement. If anyone knows the status of other Red Cross locations, please let us know.

The National Blood Centre in Bangkok has removed the residency requirement placed during COVID.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Blood donation centers in Thailand have largely lifted the COVID residency requirement, making it easier for expats to donate, especially Rh Negative individuals, whose numbers are significantly low among the Thai population. The National Blood Center in Bangkok has removed the residency requirement, while some locations may still have restrictions. Expats are encouraged to donate, especially in emergencies. Discussions also highlight the challenges of finding out one's blood type without prior knowledge and the rarity of Rh Negative blood among Thais.

I have one more thing to add

Rh- is extremely rare in the Thai population. 0.03% of Thai, 15% of Foreigners. It is a challenge to find enough donors, we ask Rh Negative donors to register.

Bumrungrad International Hospital, a leading hospital in Bangkok, recommends all Foreigners know their blood type - specifically because of Rh- shortfalls.

Hi Nigel, Donate at a local red cross. They will tell you on the spot.

Now, some blood banks may not test for Rh immediately as Rh- is so so rare here... they may not have a bottle of the reagent open. (the liquid that tests for a reaction)

But it will be tested later. And you can follow up with them later.

Alternatively, you can buy your own self test kit. It's an expensive option and I understand that the reagents must remain refrigerated.

I have inquired at the hospital a couple of times about donating blood. Each time they tell me come back in a few months when they're doing a blood drive.

Hi Terary, thank you for responding. The Red Cross Blood Banks are always available to take donations.

Some hospitals do not have donation capability and will host Red Cross blood drives instead. Government Hospitals often have donation capabilities. The smaller ones may not.

Please PM me and I will help you find a location near you.

You should pay people with a lot of money seriously.

Blood is our common life-source. Donated blood should be available to all patients who need it, regardless of who they are, where they are or their ability to pay.

I used to donate regularly , then there was a question on the form that asked if I lived in the UK in the 1980โ€™s between a certain time scale, I answered yes and the nurse said I could not donate anymore. I took up with the the HQ of Thailand that deals with blood donations and was informed that this is correct, so basically anyone residing in the UK during the 1980โ€™s cannot legally donate blood in Thailand

Hi Gordon, that is correct. We are working to remove this restriction. The United States removed it in October 2022. Australia in May 2022.

We encourage all Rh Negative people to join our Emergency Blood Donation Group in advance. Thank you for responding.
