Are UK citizens now eligible to donate blood in Thailand?

Feb 25, 2023
On 22 February 2023, Donors from the United Kingdom, France and Ireland are welcomed back! Following our Panel at the Foreign Correspondents Club in Bangkok.

Please give the Thai Red Cross proper time to disseminate this change throughout their organization. I will provide an update as soon as possible. This is a recent development and it has not been coordinated through the blood banks. Expect it soon.

Rh Negative is an extremely rare blood type in the Thai population. Thailand has one of the World's least prevalence of Rh Negative at 0.3%. The Western population is 25% to 15%.

Previously deferred Donors from the UK, France and Ireland are Welcomed Back. No restrictions on Europe.

We are calling on the Western population to donate blood. If you are ineligible to donate, we ask for your advocacy.

If you are Rh-Negative, please consider joining the Thailand Emergency Blood Donations Facebook Group.

TLDR : Answer Summary
On February 22, 2023, it was announced that donors from the UK, France, and Ireland are welcomed back to donate blood in Thailand. This change comes after a period of deferral, and there are currently no restrictions for donors from Europe. The Thai Red Cross has been notified, and further updates will be provided soon. There is a particular call for Rh Negative donors, as this blood type is rare in Thailand.

The French woman received enough donors and has returned to France over the weekend. I would like to put you in contact with our blood coordinator on Koh Phangan. He is an American registered nurse. He should be connecting with you via messenger shortly

ok great. I will do all that with pleasure.

If you have time it might be a good idea to write me a post in Thai language explaining the new law for UK citizens and if they have received authorisation yet . If not, don't worry I will find someone that speaks English. ๐Ÿ™

That has to filter down from the Thai Red Cross National Blood Centre to their regional and local blood banks. It's rolling through now..

I'm just not certain which blood banks know. It's really a surprising new change. ๐Ÿ’

If they turn you away... it's because the Thai Red Cross is still in the Roll-out process

Are you Rh- ? Rh Negative is extremely rare in the Thai population. There is a specific group that manages the Rh Negative donors in Koh Phangan.

Hello, so I have been to the government hospital on koh phangan and asked about donating blood . They said they don't do that at the hospital. I asked if there was anywhere on koh phangan and they suggested I try the First Western hospital, which is private. Can that be correct ?

Many thanks ๐Ÿ™

Thank you. It would be wonderful to get feedback on which blood banks the information has been extended to.

If they do let you donate on your UK passport, please do a Photo Op.

Thailand is the front-runner of the non-European/Western countries to Welcome Back Donors from The UK, France and Ireland

Many countries still have this restriction, including Western nations.

Celebrate ๐Ÿพ Thailand ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ญ with your passport photo donating blood!
