Hi guys.

Looking for travel advise to Savaankhet from suratthani airport.

Options are flying to...

Udon thani

Sakon nakon

Nakon phanom

Are there buses to Mukdaham from all these airports and do the run throughout they day?

Or is there a better option that somebody has experinced before.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the best travel options from Surat Thani Airport to Savannakhet. Various suggestions include flying to nearby airports like Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, or Nakhon Phanom, and then taking buses to Mukdahan. Some users recommend using Air Asia or Nok Air for transfers that include bus options to Mukdahan, while others highlight that buses might not operate directly from the airports. Additionally, there are mentions of visa types being processed in Savannakhet, prompting some travelers to take this route for visa runs.

Fly to Ubon airport, taxi to bus station then bus to mukdahan then again over the friendship bridge to savannakhet. Easy as walking around the corner

but when come back from savannakhet you probably have to go to a pick up point by yourself which is designated by nok air in mudahan town area. example airasia van doesn't go to the checkpoint to pick me up. I have to take the bus all the way to mudahan town area then take a motor bike taxi the hotel pick up point. ( I have no idea how nok air do the arrangements ) you can give them a call to confirm the transfer is done

you can buy the whole trip together all the way to mudahan border when you purchase the air ticket with nok air. I don't think airasia fly to nakhon pathnom.

nok air - surat thani to nakhon pathnom by air then nakhon pathnom to mudahan border checkpoint by van ( airport transfer). at checkpoint grab the cross border bus at 50 baht all the way to savannakhet bus station.

if you are taking flight like airasia or nok air there is an option to buy a transfer from nakhon pathnom to mudahan by van for additional of 400 baht

Those are the "Fly-n-ride" options for Air Asia or Nok Air and you have to select it when you buy your ticket, you can't just fly to one of the airports and then decide to get the mini van to Mukdahan :/

last I took was from Bangkok to nakhon pathnom then airport van transfer to mudahan immigration checkpoint...... but take note if you return from savannahkhet and if want the airport van transfer you must go the hotel waiting point upon coming into Thailand. they will send to checkpoint but they won't pick you from checkpoint

ahh, yep you need to use either Savannakhet or the thai consulate in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) Vietnam for that one.

Just curious
@Ma**
, what is the reason you're slogging from Surat Thani to the thai consulate in Savannakhet?

I mean what visa are you going to apply for? Can't you get it in Penang?

There might not be buses from the airport but you can certainly get to a bus station and get transportation to Mukdahan.

Why not fly into Bangkok and then use either Air Asia or Nok Air's fly-n-ride that take you right to Mukdahan?

Mark, yep WAY too late to do anything but cross into Lao find a guest house and wait until the next morning when the consulate opens up. They only take visa applications in the morning from 9 until about 11:30 or so.

They give the passports back the next working day in the afternoon about 1:30 or 2PM, <- that's why I said get the 5 or 5:30 flight back to Bangkok because you can't make any of the earlier ones.

, actually the time points don't work out that well going to Mukdahan on either flight because you get there too late to get across the river to the consulate to turn in your paperwork. so you end up staying another day. The return flight isn't bad if you pick one that leaves at like 5PM because that gives you enough time to get your passport back, get across the river and get to the pick up point for the bus to take you back to the airport.

Once you're at the border, here are buses that take you to across the bridge after you stamp out of thailand, and the thai consulate is like 4 kilometers from the bridge once you get into Savannakhet.

Believe me you're not gonna be the only foreigner wanting to get to the thai consulate from the bridge at Mukdahan ;)

Ok prices and times look ok. It also states that the bus will drop of at Friendship bridge.

What are my options once at the bridge?
