What are the best ways to travel from Bangkok to Savannakhet for a visa run without using a mini-van?

Hi everyone!

I have to go for my Visa soon and I was wondering what was the best way to go to Savannakhet from Bkk, I was looking to do Bbk / Savannakhet by plane but plane tickets are really expensive!

Do you have any others recommendations?

(No mini Van !)

Maybe VIP buses with comfort will be fine?

Many thanks ! 🙂

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user seeks affordable travel options from Bangkok to Savannakhet for a visa run, specifically avoiding mini-vans. The community suggests alternative methods including taking a VIP train, flying to nearby cities like Ubon or Nakorn Phanom, and transferring to Mukdahan before crossing into Laos, as flights to Savannakhet directly are limited and costly.

The key is to fly to a city close to the Lao border, not too far from Savannakhet. You don't want to fly into Savannakhet itself; hardly any flight s (only from Vientiane these days, the Bangkok via Pakse flight no longer exists) and there is no VOA at Savannakhet airport either.

I doubt it's expensive to fly Air Asia to Nakorn Phanom or any carrier to Ubon and then travel the 1.5-2 hours to the border at Mukdahan by taxi or bus and then catch the international bus across the border.

Check if you can just walk in or need an online appointment. They can get booked up well in advance

They are a tour/transport/travel company not a visa agency, very good professional company. But yes it's 12 hour's in a mini van.

Thanks,Yes, I've already travelled in a van to Laos in the past and it was horrible. I'm looking for a minimum of comfort when travelling now.

recommend to go with vip train. better than bus.

I think Vietiane is more easy to go. near border.
