Good day everyone 

I am exploring the possibility of travelling from Hua Hin to Udon Thani for a few days and then travelling from Udon Thani to Bangkok both journeys by train, so my question is how should I go about getting the tickets? We'll be in Hua Hin for a few days prior to travelling so there's opportunity to get the tickets from the station, or can anyone recommend an online site?

If you are sure of your travel dates get the tickets at Hua Hin station. Have the dates and train numbers written down so as to avoid any possible misunderstanding

There's a 200baht bus from bluepoint shopping mall in hau hin to Bangkok 4 hours and comfortable. It will drop you by the sky train, which you can take to bang Sue train station for your onward train journey.
