TLDR : Answer Summary
This post discusses various SIM and eSIM options available for travelers in Thailand, providing insights on services that also work in Cambodia and Vietnam. Users have shared positive experiences with Jetpac eSIM for its ease of setup and data speed, especially in tourist areas like Phi Phi Island. There is also mention of local Thai SIM cards easily obtainable at airports and convenience stores such as 7-11, and suggestions for using international roaming with home carriers. Key advice includes checking mobile carrier options from home countries, understanding roaming settings, and recognizing the validity periods of tourist SIMs.

You can get a Thai SIM either at airport or at 7-11 which comes with a starter amount of data. Then if you add credit either through the app of the service provider or at 7-11, you can add a ‘local Asian countries’ (which will cover Cambodia, Vietnam etc) roaming pack through the app or via sms service codes that you’ll find on the website of the service provider.

uh super! Has a normal Thai Sim a commitment period? Or can cancel it after a month(s)?

the Tourist SIMs are normally valid for 1-3 months and then they expire automatically unless you continue to top up/add credit. They are pre pay. So no commitment period at all. You will need to provide passport or ID to purchase a SIM in Thailand btw.

your roaming should be turned off on your home data plan. You can use WiFi calling to call back home free on your home plan, just make sure it's set for wifi calling and in airplane mode. With either SIM or eSIM you can also use FB Messenger, IG, Skype, etc for calls. I've seen a SIM card that covers different countries in Asia but can't remember the details.

Mine with AIS is set for only Thai use. So I don’t need to do that. However you can choose for data roaming in your package then when you travel to another country it should be turned off

Better to have your home countrynumber as e-sim, and the temporary foreign number as simcard.

I am from the USA and have T-Mobile. They allow wifi calling and have free low speed data while in Thailand. If I use roaming it cost 25 cents a minute. Most of my Thai friends use Line or WhatsApp.

not being confrontational in any way but free wifi calling can be established without ANY cel carrier whatsoever.

Back in the US I ported my phone to google voice ($20 for the port) and completely free to use! So I can call/receive phone, text, even voicemail completely free and people no idea anything had changed. All it takes is wifi or other cel service providing data.👍

you can easily get a local Thai sim card once you land at the airport.

Same for Vietnam. Not sure for Cambodia but most likely the same. Easy and no need to do something extra before you arrive. One caveat is if you arrive late at night, then not if these shops will be open.

you insert a Thai sim card onto your phone. So it's not roaming and you don't have to turn it on. Usually the seller will just set everything up for you. You just need to keep your local sim card or turn back on your e-sim when you get back to your country.

Depends on your home country options. Check if your mobile carrier sells a s e Asia sim.

Just came back from Thailand last week, and i very highly recommend Jetpac esim I bought the 10$-50gb pack and the setup was super easy! Took me 4-5 mins. I landed in Thailand, and switched it ON! It took about 1-2 mins to connect! It was amazing 5G and awesome speeds! It was working even on phiphi island! Really amazing and highly recommended! They also have an added perk of free lounge access if flights delayed, though our flight was on time, so we couldn’t use that! Website below Www.jetpacglobal.com
