Should we do a border run to Malaysia or apply for an extension in Hua Hin for our Thailand stay?

Hello, We would like to stay in Thailand for 3 months. Our initial visa free entry will be for 60 days. Q: Is it better to take a trip to Malaysia (Penang) or some other country and re-enter or apply/get extension in Hua Hin ? Also what documents are needed to get an extension of stay?

Thank you for your advice
Answer summary
The user seeks guidance on whether to extend their stay in Thailand after the initial 60-day visa exemption or to leave the country and re-enter. Community comments suggest that extending the visa at an immigration office is advisable, emphasizing the need for certain documents such as a TM.7 application form, recent photo, passport with at least six months validity, and proof of accommodation. Some advise against border runs due to stricter monitoring, while others highlight the importance of being a genuine tourist with prepared documentation.

There is nothing other than rumours that the visa exemption is to be changed. So you should arrive and obtain 60 days exemption. This can then be extended at your local immigration office. If you want to travel to other countries why not do that at the end of your visit?

Immigration are about to reduce the cost initial visa exemption from 60 to 30 days, might have problems depending when you arrive. Applying for a 90 day visa before arrival gives a better chance but entry is at the discretion of the immigrant officer either way.

visa free entry looks like being reduced in near future...keep an eye on it....or just get a visa for worry free entry

Normally, when entering Thailand, you get a 60 day visa and when you want to stay for 30 days more, You have go to the Immigration Office In the area same as your TM.30 and the documents required -TM.7 application form

-1 photo, size 4X6 cm (taken within 6 months)

-passport At least 6 months remaining

-Copy of passport, visa, last authorization stamp -TM 30 -Residential rental contract / Evidence of rental payment same adress TM 30 and if rent house/appartment/Condominium you need Copy of house registration+ID card of host and yes that's person who made contract.

Kjetil Lindaas read the post, they get 60days and then a 30 day extension at immigration, perfectly within the rules, why tell them to goto a border or get a visa when they don't need to? 🤡

Suggest you monitor the situation closely with regard to the duration of the visa exempt entry , and if it changes then get single entry tourist visas and extend them in Hua Hin.

Bobba Raja Sekhar Reddy no they haven't, stop spreading bollocks. Immigration were cracking down on people living long term by doing back to back border bounces.

Genuine tourist don't have any issues.

James Mitchell that's true , but this guy going out doing boarder run , he may be asked be prepared to give genuine reasons

Bobba Raja Sekhar Reddy if he does not extend the first visa-exempt entry 60 days, and given he hasn't done any visa-exempt stays in the recent 1-year period, he can easily do a border run and get stamped in for another 60 days. Thus enabling to stay up to 120 days. Of course he would have to be prepared to show the famous three proofs: onward travel, accomodation and 20,000 THB or equivalent in cash

there is no such visa, when a tourist visa is issued it is valid for entry into Thailand for 90 days but only gets you stamped in for 60 days
