Should we do a border run from Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai, and what are our visa options after entering Thailand on August 27th?

*edit* Will we have time to get to chaing Mai tomorrow, find a hostel/hotel to dump bags and get a border bounce done either tomorrow or Tuesday? Or better to get straight to Chaing Rai? And am I right we have until Tuesday at midnight if we entered Aug 27th?***

Time flies! We entered Thailand on Visa exemption Aug 27th. There are 6 of us on US passports. We are in Bangkok with plans to move to Chaing Mai for a few months. I apologize if this has been answered repeatedly, but for some reason I get so overwhelmed trying to research our options. We wanted to do our two border runs for the year and ideally see a bit of another country in the process. We have ran into a bank issue though and money is MUCH tighter than anticipated, so looking for the cheapest/easiest way to get this done. Not sure if the 30 day extension here in Bangkok is best, get to Chaing Mai if we can tomorrow and do it there or go to Laos or ??? If we leave the country at this point is another 30 day exemption best or getting a 60 day Visa? Anything else I dont even know to ask? Sorry, I'm stressing here. 🤪🤪🤪

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the options for six US passport holders who entered Thailand on a visa exemption on August 27th. They are considering whether to travel to Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai for a border run and seek the cheapest and easiest way to extend their stay. The community comments provide various suggestions, including applying for a 30-day extension for 1,900 baht, going to Mae Sai for a border run, or traveling to Vientiane, Laos for a 60-day visa. The importance of timing and logistics for the border run is also highlighted.

You got two choices;

1 - border bounce at the Mae Sai - Tachiliek border with Burma. It costs 500baht (or a pristine $10 US dollar note) to get stamped in and out of burma at that crossing. PLUS what ever it costs to lug you there and back from Chiang Mai

OR

2 - go to the Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai immigration office and apply for a 30 day extension for 1900baht each.

Good Luck (y)

OK your passport will say your date and then take a ride there tomorrow my girlfriend will give you a great deal to drive you there and back and then stay at the spicy thai in Chiang Mai Send me a message I get you nice deal in a nice car with Bluetooth choose your own music and she speaks pretty damn good English n she also knows exactly where to go as I did it 2months ago Also I can arrange for you to see the white temple to its quit amazing

and you know these people how exactly? Or do you randomly solicit people on the inter-web to border bounce via your g/f's car?

An extension is 1,900 baht. In Chiang Mai it's about 400-600 baht (roughly, sorry, been a few years for me) to get a VIP return ticket on Green Bus from the Arcade Bus Station in Chiang Mai to go to Mae Sai in Chiang Rai Province. You then get a Songtaew from the bus station (15 baht) to the border and cross into Myanmar and the town of Tachilek (500 baht or US$10 for the entry) then return and get another 30 days visa exempt entry.

Note that you can only get two visa exempt entries via a land border per year. Tachilek is a semi-nice third world shithole, you can literally be stamped into Myanmar and out if you want to without passing customs (their English is excellent) but Tachilek is quite the mini-adventure, some people highly rate the market, I don't :) The casino on the hill on the other hand is so weird it's worth a visit :)

Duncan your comments about Tachilek gave me a chuckle. I have only been there once and only stayed long enough for a few pics and a short walk about. What struck me was that even though you have only crossed a short bridge you can tell very easily and immediately that you are in a different country.

better to just come Chiang Mai for the night leave in the am be there by noon do the border cross for 30minutes check out the Lil stands right across the border then walk back across her in the car and go but I'm sure my girl would bring you to the temple to

Might be worth checking flights to Chiang Rai and fly straight there from Bangkok instead of Chiang Mai

check what date it says in your passport that you are stamped in until. I think you're right re it being Tuesday but check to be sure. You will be able to go up to Mae Sai at your leisure on Tuesday from Chiang Rai. It's only about an hour bus trip

thank you for all this! We are leaning towards going straight to Chaing Rai by bus, seems like our best bet. Am I calculating correctly that we will have Tuesday to do this being that we entered Thailand Aug 27th?
Dianne *****
Yes that is correct. The tickets on the Green Bus to Mae Sai were 315 baht per person each way in January. This was the cost for comfortable armchair recliner like seats. It would be pretty impossinle to arrive in Chiang Mai on Monday and do your border run the same day. Unless you are arriving in Chiang Mai at 4.00 or 5.00am. You need to be at the Arcade Bus Station by 7.45am to catch the 8.00am bus. The bus station is not near the old town and you could find yourself in peak hour traffic that barely moves. It's risky trying to get out there straight after arriving in Chiang Mai. Have a look on the Green Bus Thailand website and see the seat availability. You can book your seats like you would do on an aircraft. You can pay for your tickets by credit card or at any

. The 8.00 am bus for this Tuesday does not have 6 seats near the front available, people will have booked those well in advance. The 6.00am bus has plenty of seats, this is not such a comfortable bus but it is adequate. It will cost you 319 baht per person each way. Leaving at 8.00 will get you to Mae Sai about 12.30 depending on traffic and road works. It is not far to the border from the Mae Sai bus station but not walking distance either. Allow about 15 mins by songteow to get to the border. I would reccommend booking the 3.30pm bus back to Chiang Mai to give yourselves adequate time to get through Thai and Myanmar immigration both times, time to look around the quaint little market in Tacheleik and maybe grab a bite to eat. It's a long day without food and you don't get to stop for food on the bus trips. Bring snacks and plenty of water. Conversely though your idea of flying directly into Chiang Rai is not a bad idea at all. You would save money on the bus journey on the way up to the border and still book to travel to Chiang Mai on the Green Bus the next day or later. That way you could have a bit of a look around Chiang Rai and see the white and black temples.

Or you could do as others have said and go to immigration and do your extensions there for 1900 baht each. It is likely to be chaos at immigration this week as they will have just moved back (24th September) to their original building near the airport, about 500 metres from the airport. It is walkable, if you have a lot of luggage you might find it easier to leave it in the left luggage facility in Chiang Mai airport

thanks! So we could possibly save maybe up to 1k per person and get another 30 day exemption is what I'm understanding, is that correct?
Paul *******
From Chiang Mai, the trip to Mae Sui is simple and cheap. Cross nto Burma and get 30 days on your return.
Trevor ******

We are coming from Bangkok.

Chiang Rai is 3hrs giver take way better then 12hrs if you book with my gf
Dianne *****
Yes definitely the cheaper option, it's a long day trip ie 12 hours but it is nice scenery on the way up and interesting the first time you do it. If you can afford a night in Chiang Rai and so can break up the trip that might make it more enjoyable
Stephen *******
That would be Mae Sai. :)
Nikolina *******
You could go to vientiane from chiang mai, and get there 60 days visa. u can extend it another 30 days. so it gives you 3 months all together

1900bht extension at any immigration gives you 30 days more stay.
