I am looking to apply for a visa based on marriage . My wife and I were married in Australia 17 years ago. Am I better to get our marriage certificate and other documents translated and notarized in Australia , or take it all to Thailand and have it done there?
Answer summary
The individual is seeking advice on the best approach to translate and notarize their marriage certificate for a visa application based on marriage to a Thai spouse. Comments suggest both options: having documents translated and notarized in Australia or doing it in Thailand. Users highlight that documents should ideally be apostilled or notarized by an approved lawyer in Australia, with some preferring to handle it directly in Thailand for convenience. It's also emphasized that a foreign marriage needs to be registered in Thailand to be recognized by immigration.

My wife and I were married in Thailand 16 years ago, then moved to Australia, last year we moved back after selling everything in Australia.

Due to a foreigner not being able to open a bank account immediately on arrival we transferred all proceeds from house sale to her account.

Didn't take long for me to wind up back in Australia with little more than a suitcase, and not knowing when I'll see my 8yo Australian born son again.

Be careful

Anthony Mcdonald i went to the Australian embassy in Bangkok got my documents certified there but I also had the translated in Bangkok. English to Thai . Then went to foreign affairs at Central world for them to legalise the documents. It's a head ache but it has to be done. The staff there are absolutely excellent

You should get it apostilled, translated and approved by the Thai embassy in Australia prior to travelling

I've just did this and it needs to be notarized by an approved lawyer and the authenticated by dfat then the embassy not apostilled.
