Should I provide both city and state of birth on my application in Malaysia as an American?

Question: Please go easy on me people.

I'm applying in Malaysia as an American. The application asks for city of birth. My passport has the state I was born in not the city. Would you put both the city and the state? Or only the city? I would imagine all the relevant info is in their computer system. I don't want to F this up and be rejected. Your help is appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
An American expat applying for a visa in Malaysia is unsure whether to list both the city and state of birth or just the city as the application only specifies 'city of birth' while the passport contains the state. Community members suggest filling in the city as per the application requirement but also recommend indicating the state as mentioned in the passport to avoid issues. Other comments discuss experiences with employment document certification and the online application process.

Same same here. I recently applied and wrote to immigration to ask, i never heard back so I put exactly how it is in my passport.

Serious question: if you are American, why would you apply there? Apparently it’s all online, I’m gonna try for the Chicago one

For this who applied in Malaysia, how on earth did you get employment documents certified by the company's embassy in Malaysia? I am applying as Freelancer and currently hold two large consulting contracts, but one is from the UN (there is no such thing as a relevant embassy as it's an international organisation) and the other is from Italy who won't certify. I emailed the Italian embassy and they replied they can't do it (understandably). It makes sense that they can only certify government issued documents, not private sector stuff. So they won't certify an employment contract, as required by the Malaysian embassy.Don't know what to do 🙁 thanks for any experience sharing.

not really.. I wish 😆 I’m a international consultant. Honestly I would chose Hanoi based on my research if I could but not likely to get there any time soon. 😭

go to Jakarta for a few days, it seems a doddle to do it there, as per a post in this group. Check it out… just a few days to get done.

Scrap this. Jakarta looks like a nightmare… enter Vientiane…

I would put what is in the passport. They don’t ‘care’ they’re just ticking boxes bro. If you’re concerend puy both, definitely don’t miss what it says in the passport though, so have the state if that is what is listed

Thanks, I thought I might get dinged if I put both in the "what city were you born in" box. I'll put both.

Anonymous participant I would put what is in the passport personally but up to you.

, after reviewing the application again and looking at American info online. Putting the state only from my passport makes the most sense. Thank you!
