One of my friends asked about a one year nomad visa that allows someone to stay and work remotely from Thailand without a work permit. He sent an article from Jan 2022. Anyone know more about it?

TLDR : Answer Summary
There is ongoing discussion about a potential digital nomad visa for Thailand, but as of now, it has not been officially implemented. A new visa category referred to as LTR (Long-Term Residence) is expected, targeting remote workers among others, but there are strict requirements being proposed, including proof of substantial income and relevant employment experience.
From what I read the requirements made it a little silly. Advanced degree or high income ($250,000 US with a million bucks in the bank). It really makes more sense to send two years abroad, 3 months Thailand, 3 Months Malaysia, ....

It's a proposal only at the moment: "For those interested in gaining a digital nomad visa, proof of earning $40,000 USD per year is required, along with having health insurance coverage of at least $100,000 USD." I think there were other requirements mentioned as well, (something about a master's degree and proof of two years employment) but we'll have to wait and see what their final version says.

I very much doubt someone uploading a load of videos to youtube and getting a small wage for it will qualify for the proposed new visa type.
says, or, on a more optimistic note, it may be launched some time this month. There is supposed to be a new visa category referred to as LTR, with 4 sub-categories. One of which is designed for "Work-From-Thailand Professional (remote worker)". The exact requirements are not known yet. There will likely be requirements such as proven minimum earnings, work experience and (bad news for many remote workers) a contract with reputable (big) companies. At least that is what the SMART visa unit of the Board of Investment BOI told me.

You're going to have to buy an Elite Visa.

They've been talking about a Visa like this for years. It doesn't exist and it may not ever.
