Is the 72-hour Covid test deadline based on the test date or the result date for Thailand travel?

Is the covid test results 72 hours when you get your negative test result or when you take the actual test? If it’s when you take the actual test, what if it takes 72 hours to get your results sent to you, is that too late?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The requirement for the Covid-19 test in relation to travel to Thailand is based on when the test is taken, not when the results are received. Travelers must take the RT-PCR test within 72 hours prior to departure. It's essential to ensure you receive the test results in time; ideally, travelers should get the test done early enough to accommodate potential delays in receiving results.

It funny how it is so highly contagiou by saliva... even droplets of moisture... necessary for mask 24h/7 and all the rest... but then they need to stick a dik into ur nose till it touches ur brain than taking some saliva...

Definitely from when the report is issued which is listed on the report.

As so many have said, make sure you get the correct test. LAMP tests are available at Heathrow Airport in London, but not many countries accept these (for example, Hong Kong does take them!). Most countries want RT-PCR tests, which take a lot longer than the LAMP.

And don’t forget it’s a RT-PCR test

Hi I arrived in Thailand yesterday you need to take the PCR test 72 hrs prior to your departure not arrival, and don’t forget your fit to fly certificate.

RT stands for Rapid Test, the PCR is the coivid test, on the Embassy's application for in the USA it specifically says RT-PCR also when coming out of airport in Bangkok that is the test they are looking for.. Just did this a week ago... They did accept ours from the US it was a LUMIRADX SARS-COV-2 AG TEST.. We had had Another the week before a RdRp gene NAA+ probe Ql (Resp) and after looking them up online when we were going through screening they let us go saying that they were basically the same test...
Kathy ****************
Hey all I know is they accepted both of our test and neither one where the rt-pcr they were just a normal rapid test

even in the US it doesn’t stand for rapid test. (No matter what an embassy employee told you). Here’s an FDA screenshot explaining the wording.
Kathy ****************
That is what the Thai embassy wants

@Kathy ***************
the RT stands for reverse transcription as the FDA site states.

@Stuart ********
exactly the real time stands for rapid testing.

I fail to see how you can equate two completely different word combinations. No where on earth does REAL TIME equate to RAPID TEST. It’s like saying BROWN EGGS equate to BOILED EGGS. They both have the same initials, but they do not have the same meaning.
Kathy ****************
You have to take a rapid test Thailand wants the rt-pcr and they will actually look for that name and you get the results back within 30 minutes of those

[Edited]. From the wording on the instructions from the Thai embassy in London I thought it was 72 hours from the results. However the wording is ambiguous, so rather than state categorically that that is the case I’d advise you check with your local embassy/ airline.

just do the test within 72 hours of departure then your result will also be within 72 hours... sounds like a rapid test that takes 30 mins to have a result. Even with a backlog of results it's not going to take days to get yours, but look for a place that guarantees same day result, if you're worried.

Unfortunately there poor wording will be your problem and responsibility if that’s the case

the wording is very ambiguous and as a result this topic has been discussed many times. I know a few other countries i looked at had much better wording and it was clear it was from the test. However the consensus on here for Thailand has seemed to be that it is from results. People have given examples of being allowed entry with no issues as well as screenshots of messages clarifying it. I was still skeptical and contacted the airline I am flying in 2 days, Qatar, and they very clearly told me it was results. It is still possible it is from the test but I would expect an airline that had to go through the approval process to be allowed to fly the semi commercial flights and has been doing it for months would know and tell their customers the right information. If not I would suspect they wouldve had a fair number of angry customers, since I think they are supposed to check before allowing you to board?, and corrected the information by now.

I could not find anywhere near me that could even guarantee a result window smaller than 72 hours. So I had to make a choice to take the test outside the 72 hour window and get results back inside the window, or take the test inside the 72 hours and risk not having results back in time. Since all the evidence I have seen says it is results I went that route. I feel pretty confident about it, but of course have a little concern. If it's wrong you can guarantee Qatar airways is going to be hearing from me.

What country was it that you were almost turned away? I know a few other countries i looked at had much better wording.

@Stuart ********
everything I’ve read says that it’s not 72 hours for the result but 72 hours from the sample being taken

@Jared *********
I’ll stand corrected by anyone who’s actually had to do it, but this is the requirement listed at the Thai embassy in London.

I went to another country with the same wording and was almost turned away because while my test results were less then 48 hours the sample taken was over 72, I think it’s poor wording on there part....as someone who has had to reschedule I suggest anyone with questions gets clarification from your embassy

You are the only one I heard from that has had an issue. glad it worked out.

@Jared *********
agreed it’s ambiguous.
