TLDR : Answer Summary
A recent discussion highlights the potential reopening of Phuket to foreign tourists as part of a trial to test COVID-19 preventive measures. Four French tourists reportedly entered Thailand via a private jet as part of this trial. Comments reflect a mix of skepticism and support regarding the safety and impact of tourism on the local economy. Concerns are raised about the potential risks of importing COVID-19 cases from Europe, while others question the significance of such a small test group.

Look at the European Covid infection rates now going through the roof after the European summer holidays. Thailand would just be importing this problem. People will just break quarantine.

That's not realistically a problem, no one is getting out of quarantine in Thailand. It's state enforced quarantine, not home quarantine.

this people are sick. blaming foreigners for not wearing masks,ok get things straight here, I'm not a fan of wearing masks, but when I walk around here in Chiang mai, 90% of those that don't wear mask are Thais, this can be proven by some pictures. These racists are ridiculous

4 French, 2 French + 2 Thai... it was a test run, it wasn't a test run... ordinary arrival? repatriation flight with private jet? why they stayed at quarantine and left immediately after that?

What a weird story... 🤔🤔🤔

Quote: "Khaosod English reports that on August 14, the 2 arrived on a flight carrying 2 repatriating Thai nationals. They were admitted to a quarantine hotel, where they spent 14 days, before departing Thailand for Cambodia on August 29, according to Thanee. He says media reports that the pair were smuggled into the country as part of a trial of the much-hyped “Phuket Model” are false."

Quote: "Four French tourists recently arrived in Phuket on a private jet and were approved to enter Thailand by the CCSA, to test the readiness of COVID-19 preventive measures on the resort island ahead of a wider reopening to foreign tourists, said Phuket Governor Narong Woonsiew on Wednesday."

Quote: "Meanwhile, Sub-Lt Thanee Chuangchoo, director of Phuket international airport, said that Phuket had been chosen for the trial opening of the country to foreign tourist arrivals, with the four French tourists being the first, with the consent of both the CCSA and the Thai Foreign Ministry."

Quote: “We didn’t announce to the public earlier since it was only an ordinary arrival,” Thani said, adding that the trip was approved by the government’s pandemic response center."
