Hello,

I would appreciate opinions/advice on my following plan for staying in Thailand under the latest updated visa rules for 4 months starting Nov 6. I am a US citizen and my flight is already booked leaving USA Nov 4:

Arrive Thailand Nov 6 getting 30 days stamp at airport.

Get 30 day extension at Chiang Mai immigration which I’ve done before.

At end of 30 day extension take 3 day side trip to neighboring country.

Return Thailand getting new 30 day stamp at airport.

Get 30 day extension again at Chiang Mai immigration.

Will this be allowed?

Would METV make better sense and if so is it generally easy to apply for and receive?

Thanks very much…..
Answer summary
The user plans to enter Thailand with a 30-day stamp, extend for another 30 days, take a trip to a neighboring country, and re-enter for another 30-day stamp with a second extension. Various community members advise that securing a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) might be safer, as extending visas can be unpredictable and risky under the updated immigration rules. Concerns were raised about the limits on extensions and the implications of multiple entries on the user's immigration record.

It is much better if you plan your time, and traveling to another country so you don't take a 30 day extension until your last entry into Thailand. Taking the 30 day extension now is a big red flag to immigration, when you try to re-enter Thailand. Under the updated rules you are now allowed only two land border crossing re-entries a year into Thailand. Theoretically what you want to do would work, but, you don't really want repeated extensions on your records. Just saying.

That’s only 3 months I’d get the METV

Some immigration offices may only issue a 7-day extension for the 2nd visa exempt extension, so if you want to be sure you can get 60 days each time, you would want the METV.

Get the Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV), there's no guarantee you will get that 2nd extension

Get a multi entry tourist visa from Your country. Valid for 6 months with stays of up to 60 days. That will govern you enough time and only have to leave once.
