I have a friend arriving as a tourist. I assume the regular 30 day. He may extend.

He is asking if still a requirement to show that you have a flight ticket departing the kingdom within the 30 days?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, it is still required to show proof of onward travel when entering Thailand as a tourist. Immigration officers may ask for this proof along with evidence of sufficient finances (20,000 THB or equivalent) and accommodation arrangements. It's also noted that while presenting documentation for an extension of stay, the onward ticket may not be necessary, but it can still be requested.

Can book a cheap flight on Expedia.com (US website) and cancel within 24 hrs. So book before boarding and cancel on arrival

On a Pre Covid tourist trip to Thailand - no visa but the allowed stamp in of 30 day. The airline asked me for proof of onward travel before I was allowed to board.

Based on your wording it's difficult to tell if you are asking about arriving to Thailand or for when he goes for the extension.

For the extension he won't need to show a ticket departing Thailand.

Not often, still, IO could ask you to show onward ticket for a tourism extension.

Additionally, he may need to show an onward ticket at the airline check-in.

Please: If you intend to comment: I got never asked to proof that the rules does not exist in your mind set, do not worry about the effort.

Your comment is useless in front of an Immigration Officer when asked.

I will delete your advice.

Yes, rules did not change. Immigration can still ask

1. Proof of onward travel

2. Proof of finances, 20.000 Thb or equivelant in cash

3. Proof of accommodation.
