I read about the automatic 60 day tourist visa upon arrival BUT ive also read about applying for same but an E Visa online from home prior to arrival but which costs what $60 CAD?
So what at all is the point or advantage in paying for said visa over being granted one automatically once arrived?
Please enlighten me
Thank you. ๐

TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation discusses the differences between the automatic 60-day visa exemption upon arrival in Thailand and the tourist visa obtained by applying online. Key points include:
1. **Visa Exemption vs. Tourist Visa:** Those eligible for visa exemption receive 60 days upon arrival without any fees, while applying for a tourist visa online incurs a cost (around $60 CAD) but offers a formalized proof of entry.
2. **Similar Requirements:** Both entry methods require similar proof, including identity verification, onward travel, and sufficient cash.
3. **Scrutiny on Multiple Entries:** Frequent travelers with visa exemption may face more scrutiny than those entering with a purchased visa.
Overall, for eligible travelers, there is generally no significant advantage to applying for the tourist visa online.
When you apply for a tourist visa you prove who you are, where you are, that you have a ticket and want to go to Thailand for a 60 days stay based on tourism.
When you enter on a 60 days visa exemption you also prove who you are, where you came from, that you had a ticket and now want to get stamped in for a 60 days stay based on tourism.
Besides this all requirements are the same.

The difference is simply one is s visa that you pay for, the other is not any visa. But is a visa exempt entry stamp granting you the same 60 days the actual visa does. Over multiple entries, I think the visa exempt stamp gets scrutinised more than an actual visa entry.

No advantage for you

There's no such thing as a tourist visa on arrival. If you're from an eligible country and you arrive without a visa, then you'll receive visa exempt, which is not a visa.
Visa exempt used to be 30 days, but was changed last year to 60 days. It now gives the same amount of days as a tourist visa.
For most people eligible for visa exempt, there is no benefit to applying for a tourist visa.
Not everyone in the world is eligible for visa exempt, so there are people who still require a tourist visa to travel to Thailand.
