Immigration visit

Hi, I'm currently in Thailand on the one year retirement extension. Have just passed the 1st month mark. This morning wife had a phone call from immigration police. They came to the house viewed my passport no questions to me they just wanted to see that I was living here and took a photo of them and our lil family together. Just asking if this is normal procedure and if so how regular does it happen ? Just asking cause I thought that sort of thing only happened if you were on the marriage visa.
Answer summary
The post discusses a person's experience of a home visit by immigration police while on a one-year retirement extension in Thailand, seeking information on whether this is a common practice. Responses indicate that while such visits are not typical for retirement visas, there has been an increase in occurrences. Some expats share their own experiences, with varying reports on the frequency and reasons for these visits, suggesting that the practice can depend on the immigration office and current policies.

Yes, it’s a random check. It’s happened in UK too.

I had it one time. Immigration told my wife on the phone we should "give them some gas money". They stayed for almost an hour. Gave them 3k and never had to deal with again. #teamoney

Very normal the first year. They wanted to meet my neighbor as well. Funny thing is my wife was in her home town at the time and wasn’t even there! Ha. But no issues at all. They never showed up subsequent years.

My local office requires picture of the person unfront of the house with the name/number visible, and 2 picture of the person inside the house.

Only common if you live in the middle of nowhere in your wife’s village with no friend or social life. They only visit losers and whipped people.

Nothing unusual.... it's part of their job. I have a local friend whom I knew when we were both in the airforces.

He has a brother who works in Immigration.... his work is not only to man the immigration booth at the airports but oso to monitor and conduct checks on "residents".

He has a quota of 200 files each month where he has to check that the residents are true to their application papers. He does not need to visit each and every one of them.... sometimes he talks to their landlords or property managers.... and sometimes by viewing the CCTV footages of the Condos where they reside.

Happened to me the last two years. PITA really because you don’t know if they are coming or not and when so you kinda feel under house arrest.

Absolutely normal if they choose to do so. They often advise you of a phone number that they will use to call you to tell you they plan to visit. It s no bad reflection on you. It s a random thing.

Just had ours, our first. You may have guessed it's for the marriage version though, I think it must have been a slow week in your IO, they don't usually visit for a retirement.

if you are on a retirement extension with B800,000 in the bank, there is absolutely no legal reason why they should visit your home. it is a mistake. being married or not has nothing to do with a retirement extension. i have been here for 32 years and have had no visits after i changed to a retirement visa in 1998.
Dick *************
They did that to us until my wife turned 50 yo... Strangely enough

Every IO office is different, and the visits are completely random. Even on marriage visas sometimes they dont visit. I mean... if youve been married for like 15 years living in the same house, visiting every single year is quite stupid... but hey here we are.

Been on a retirement extension since 2020 and never had anyone from immi Udonthani come to the house. My neighbour has them come each year but that is normal as they are on a marriage visa.

For the first time extension this is quite normal, (normally it’s done for marriage extensions) they don’t do it always but it is possible.

Nothing to worry about 😊

Yes, it is a normal procedure for long-term visa applicants. Surprisingly they did not interview you and cross-matching your story with neighbors.

They do a random check, nothing to do if married to thai or not, they just want to check that the house information you gave them is correct, normal procedure, It will not happen every year, next day it will be someone else.....
