Is it necessary to visit an embassy for visa applications, or can everything be done online?

Please forgive my ignorance but I notice a lot of these posts are regarding applications from embassies in countries. Is this a necessary step? I envisaged this could all be done remotely online without the need to physically go to an embassy. Apologies again if the answer is obvious and I just got confused.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The visa application process can predominantly be handled online, but embassies in your region are involved in the process. Occasionally, applicants may need to attend an interview at the embassy, which requires physical presence.

Everything is done online, but it is handled by the embassy in your region. Sometimes the embassy might ask you to come for an interview, so you should be present where you apply.

That makes sense, thank you for the heads up. I’m planning to apply whilst in the United States but there’s no local embassy to me so I may apply from somewhere else where I’m closer to an embassy on that basis. Appreciate your update 👍

Anonymous participant Their are 4 embassies/consulates in the US. The county is divided up by these 4. You select the location that oversees that state where you are physically.

appreciate that. I checked and it seems closest one to Nevada is Los Angeles if I go that route and am called in 😊

Anonymous participant you aren't going to be called in for an interview in the states

Anonymous participant Not sure I have heard of anyone being called in for an interview in the US. It is usually in countries that are small, in Southeast Asia. One concern I would have is how long the LA consulate takes. The embassies in Southeast Asia tend to be much quicker, however some have slowed down. The important point is you need to be in that country the entire time when applying, so have to think about being somewhere maybe as long as a month.

great point. Fortunately I’ll be in the states for 6 weeks at the time of applying so will apply as soon as I arrive and cross fingers all goes according to plan 😅

Anonymous participant I have not seen any posts where anyone applying in the USA was asked to come in for an interview. Have a search here and maybe look on Reddit which tends to be more USA focused to check.

Yep, I was never asked for a interview

Anonymous participant also check previous posts, as the LA consulate may request additional documents. If you have them prepared, can streamline the time. I believe they ask for tax returns
