Happy new year. Travelling from UK on 6 month multi entry visa. Would me and my family still need a return ticket or proof of onward travel?
As we're not sure from where we'll be flying home.
Many thanks....

TLDR : Answer Summary
Travelers on a 6 month multi-entry tourist visa to Thailand may often be asked for proof of onward travel or a return ticket, particularly at check-in with airlines. While technically required, experiences suggest that enforcement can vary. Some users report not being questioned at all, while others advise confirming with the airline for specific policies regarding onward travel. It's also noted that having a future flight booked, such as to Vietnam, can be beneficial if planning to extend your stay.

The question of onward ticket is asked at check in, by the airline and will need to have a one-way onward ticket within the 60 days. You can easily buy this online...
You need to ask your airline what their policy is for people on a multi-entry tourist visa and get it in writing

I had a three month visa obtained in uk but intended to apply for retirement visa when I arrived to stay indefinitely. I was worried about not having a return/onward ticket so I emailed Thai embassy in London who replied quickly to say I did not need proof of onward/ return. Kept a printed copy of the email when I travelled but was never asked about this.

In this case, if I had a flight to Vietnam after 3 months in thailand would that not suffice?as we're getting visa extention.
you're not going to be stamped into Thailand for 3 months. You're going to be stamped into Thailand for 60 days. Therefore the requirement is onward travel within the number of days you'll be stamped in for, as extensions are not guaranteed.

Your meant to have a return or onward tickets but the truth is they just don't have the time to look. Your unlikely to even have anyone even speak to you they will just stamp and move you on. I had same issue I 2023 as I wanted to extend so didn't actually know when I was leaving but had 0 issue

Assuming you'll have the multiple entry tourist visa since you didn't say which type of visa.
The same rules apply as single entry tourist visa. You'll be stamped in for 60 days so both your airline (more likely) or immigration (unlikely) can ask to see proof that you'll be leaving Thailand within 60 days each time you travel to Thailand.
