TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, a border run near Chiang Khong with a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) is possible. You can use the Chiang Khong - Huay Xai crossing to gain another entry on your METV, although you may need to purchase a visa for Lao depending on your nationality. Alternatively, you can consider the Mae Sai - Tachiliek crossing into Burma, which typically only costs about $10 USD for the stamp.

You can use the Chiang Khong - Huay Xai border crossing with Lao to get another entry on your METV. Depending on your passport you may have to buy a visa for Lao.

Another option would be the Mae Sai - Tachiliek border with burma, because it only costs $10USD to get stamped in and out of burma ..

, As busy as that border crossing is IF this is a new policy change I'm sure it'll be talked about a LOT on the inter-web. Thanx for reporting it. (y)

, that was NOT my intention when I mentioned there was signage that was placed up there from a long time ago.

As a rule the officers on the thai side won't let you stamp out of thailand IF you can't get back in.

That sign has been there for YEARS :O It has no bearing on whether people can bounce out and back in to get a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp.

Ching Chang no, the official price is $10. The only issue is how much you want to argue with them over it, sometimes they will refuse it and you have to really insist on the $10. I've crossed that border maybe 20 times and every time paid $10. The last two times (which were last year) they took the $10 without any argument. If you want to pay more, they are certainly happier with the 500B but you can pay $10 if you want. I have a small stock of USD as all visas for neighboring countries (Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia) are denominated in USD and I always pay in USD because it is cheaper, they mark up the exchange for THB (which is also why they prefer it).

Ching Chang yes it used be 14 days but I believe it is now same day only. 500B or $10, whichever you prefer ($10 is cheaper).

they can be picky about the condition of the bills, I have done it twice this year and they took my $10 without complaint each time. The first time it was even an old series (oval portrait) but it was crisp and without any tears, I didn't expect them to take it as it was an old series but they did.

They didn't accept the $10 I offered, they wanted 500 baht. This was in April this year.
