Wise Thailand

I just got a notification from Wise and looks like this will be the solution for the DTV holders without bank account.

Combining Wise and TrueMoney you are good to go on a DTV.

Answer summary
The recent changes to Wise in Thailand, set to take effect on May 19, 2026, will particularly benefit DTV holders who previously faced challenges with local banking. The integration of Wise under Thai banking regulations will allow users to send THB abroad, utilize PromptPay services, and access Wise cards. However, there will also be restrictions such as auto-conversion of foreign currency to THB upon transfer, limitations on ATM withdrawals in Thailand, and potential tax tracking implications for residents. Discussions among users highlight concerns about the practicality and restrictions introduced by the changes, as well as the possibility of losing services comparable to traditional Thai banks.

The most weird thing I can not understand about changes of wise is, for example, I am living in Thailand, so I am resident in Thailand. And I am in Thailand wise under Thai rules or governs. for example, I am a foreign resident in Thailand with Thai wise. I have my money in another country ( not thailand. I call this A) and I always send my money to my home country because I want to move my money from A to my home country. I am not living there anymore since years and do not want to live in country A. Previously I can transfer my money from A to my home country without any problem with Wise. But now, after change, I must add my money from A to my wise THB account. and must exchange it to THB first. Then I exchange THB to my home country currency again. yes twice. the transaction between the country A and my home country have nothing to do with Thailand at all. But why my money from A must come to Thailand wise first??? and why from Thai wise to my home country again? Is it a bus stop??? when so, my money is in Thailand, and it could be taxable?? even it is just a transit. But officially my money is in Thailand for seconds or minutes. because of wise new policy. There is direct flight from A to B, but why I have to arrive in Thailand and fly again from Thailand to B? it is not only double costs for twice exchange but officially it could be tax issued.

Its really none of wises business what visa I have!?! Its a miney transfer service, not big brother. Time to switch, I guess!?!

Carlos Montana no! it is not Wise decision to do this. Wise is a company and wise just comply with the rules of the bank of thailand. Wise is not watching you but Thai government is watching you. all others are the same. We are already living in a big big brother prison.

DelightfulCranberry7447 Wise knows where you are really living. it is Thailand. They know this through DNS. DNS shows that you do wise in Thailand. So Wise will ask you to update your real address. If you do not do it within 30 days, Wise will close or freeze your wise account.

@Jason **********
The company wise has own branch in each country. for example, Wise USA, Wise UK, Wise Spain, Wise Japan, Wise Thailand, they all are under own country rules. So conditions are different depending on which country. Even, you signed in USA, but you live in Thailand, yes, real resident, your wise USA changed to wise Thailand and you are under Thai rules, not USA rules. Wise will know this some day, and ask you to update your real address within 30 days. If you dont, they will close or freeze your wise account. If you do not want Wise in Thailand, just live in USA or somewhere else. real resident there. Then your wise is apply from that country rules.

Big changes are coming. Starting May 19, 2026, Wise is transitioning to a locally incorporated entity regulated by the Bank of Thailand.

If you have a Wise account with a Thai address, this month marks a major shift in how you can use the service. Here is the breakdown of what is changing, the new perks, and the new "headaches."

🚀 The Good News (New Features)

For the first time, Wise is becoming a more "local" financial tool in Thailand:

Send THB Abroad: You can finally send Thai Baht from your Thai bank account to overseas accounts using Wise's mid-market exchange rates.

PromptPay Support: You will be able to use the Wise app to scan and pay via PromptPay QR codes at local vendors and receive money instantly through your PromptPay ID.

Local Wise Card: Residents in Thailand will finally be able to order physical and digital Wise debit cards.

Direct Funding: You can add money to your Wise account directly from your Thai bank account.

⚠️ The "Gotchas" (New Restrictions)

Because Wise is moving under Thai banking regulations, there are some significant trade-offs:

Auto-Conversion to THB: Any foreign currency (USD, EUR, GBP, etc.) sent to your Wise account will be automatically converted into Thai Baht upon arrival. You can no longer hold multi-currency balances as a Thai resident.

No ATM Withdrawals in Thailand: While you can use the new Wise card to shop locally or withdraw cash outside of Thailand, you cannot use a locally-issued Wise card at ATMs within Thailand.

Higher Costs for Foreign-to-Foreign Transfers: If you want to send money from a US bank to a UK bank, it must now be converted to THB first and then to GBP. This "double conversion" will result in higher fees.

Tax Tracking: Since all incoming funds are now processed under local regulations, they are more easily tracked by the Thai Revenue Department, which could have implications for tax residents receiving foreign income.

Opening a TH Wise account comes with so many restrictions compared to a Wise account from our home countries. I don’t think it’s worth it to switch. If you’re traveling frequently or you have income from outside TH then it’s not the same.

Great. That will fall directly into the remitted money to Thailand category for Thai taxes. Once you have a Thai account under CRS and are resident, you become a tax resident in Thailand and may (or may not) be liable for taxes, depending on your situation. People see freedom in obtaining a QR payment system, but the reality is quite different.

Too much trouble 🥹 The only way I could transfer GBP200 to my friend in Australia was for my wife to go to a bank and use Western Union no gobblygeek. I already spent a day on Wise at various stages of acceptance including having an account that I could not send any money with , then after taking 5 selfie pictures !!!! None of which were accepted I gave up.

Good luck folks 😅 Maybe someone thinks they have stopped a GBP200 Money Launderer 😀

Whatever it is, this change is really good for DTV or ED , who can not hold thai bank. If no requirement of visa or extension, actually there is no reason to hold Thai bank account in Thailand. Wise has almost everything. QR code, and transfer and keep THB, it is like Thai bank. But Wise is not accredited by immigration, so wise is not Thai bank. The main reason to hold Thai bank is for immigration use.
Carlos *********
Carlos *********
Young wise doesnt regulate thai laws and has no business knowing what visa you have!!! Wise is a transfer service...banks take care of verification of ligit accounts. Wise is pushing boundaries, for what??
Yo***
Yo***
Carlos Montana Yes wise is not law regulator. Wise is just following the Thai rules like many farangs who followed rules in Thailand. if there is someone who makes this is Thai government. Not Wise.
John **********
John **********
@Yo***
if they are going to be working in line with Bank of Thailand regulatory requirements then it won't help DTV holders as they are not on a Non-immigrant visa. Whoever sent the message out appears to think that the DTV is a Non-immigrant visa so I'd be surprised if that option doesn't go away when it comes to the verification stage
RelaxingO**********
RelaxingO**********
@John *********
can you please reference the regulations you’re speaking of? ChatGPT :

The Bank of Thailand doesn’t say:

“only non-immigrant visas allowed”

But it does require strict KYC / AML checks.

That means banks must:

• verify identity

• verify residency

• understand source of funds
Yo***
Yo***
@John *********
but this change is clearly for DTV ( or similar visa holders) Not for Non O visa holders. Most of them already have Thai bank. Why do they need wise in Thailand? and anyway they must have thai bank account for immigration. once we have to have Thai bank, we have to use it. 😂
John **********
John **********
@Yo***
I'm not so sure. It is the Bank of Thailand that dictated to Thai Banks that those on tourist visas (the DTV is a tourist visa) could no longer open bank accounts. Why would they make an exception to their regulations for Wise?

Yo***

Peter Scuba address itself is not that. They will find you in DNS, where you use wise. so, for example, you registered your address in US in wise, ( you can do this in app) but when they find out that your DNS is in Thailand, they will ask if you are living in Thailand, and if not updated, your account will be frozen or limited. Address in wise app is not important. Real address is important.
Claire ********

Peter Scuba you can switch locations. You'll need a TM30 to approve address, or other for of residency approvall
Yo***
Yo***
this change is only for foreigners who can not hold Thai bank account with DTV, ED etc.. non O retirement visa holders and other long term visa holders can hold Thai bank account. So for them Wise is useless except transferring their money to Thailand. But with change, they must pay double fee and exchange rate when they send their money from overseas account to other countries except Thailand. They must exchange their money to THB first and then exchange it again to other currencies like Yen or USD or Euro. costs are double and stupid is must exchange twice. for example, you are from USA and living in Thailand on non o retirement. Now you can send your USD to Japan where your daughter lives or studies there, now you just can transfer from your USA bank to her Japanese bank directly with wise. But after change, you can not do this anymore. You must add your USD into wise Thb account and send that THB to Japanese yen. so it is double fee. This change is only for DTV or ED etc, who can not hold Thai bank account. But for non o retirement or married, this change is even worsening.
Anthony ***********
Anthony ***********
Young Wise is just one provider, if you need to send money to Japan and find the fees over the top get a second account with another provider, register with US address and send your payments with a single fee. To my knowledge they do not scan your ID add so no problem or think about a VPN

Steve Demir I mean if the thai banks find out wise are going to allow dtv holders to hold an account then I would imagine the thai banks think “we are missing out on all this money that they will be putting into wise” and change their stance on “we aren’t accepting dtv holders”
Copper*******

Young if you have a Thai bank your perspective changes and you'll think how stupid an much money you wasted over years withdrawing cash. Qr payment is so much easier, paying rent, paying for food, grabs, drinks etc without always chasing an ATM and paying 250 Bhat to get your own cash out .
Yo***
Yo***
Steve Demir but why tourists need Thai bank?? I was a tourist many times in foreign countries, but never felt needs of local bank. Actually, living without thai bank is going Ok in Thailand as foreigner. I do not have any need to get a thai bank. I have to have thai bank just because of the immigration requirement. If not, I am happy with wise! 😂
