I'm confused. How often do we need to leave the country? Every 180 days or once a year? Different info online. And we need to do 90 days reports?

Pic from Hanoi Vietnam.
Answer summary
In Thailand, visa holders are typically required to leave the country every 180 days. You receive a 180-day stamp upon entry, and while it might be possible to extend this stamp in-country, many find the process cumbersome and choose to leave instead. Additionally, if you stay in Thailand longer than 90 days, you are required to submit a 90-day report to immigration, which must be done in person at the first reporting after entering the country, but subsequent reports can often be done online. It's important to check your specific visa type and local immigration office policies as they may have different requirements.

You can live your normal life, leaving and coming back here and then for personal matters or job (I'm a regular worker). That's what I do. Never ever have had to leave specifically for the visa in the past almost two years (since I got it).

If your normal life matches the 180 days periods to leave the country, you indeed can live your normal life, but a lot of people normally stay sometimes longer, sometimes shorter in a country.

I also can live my normal life on DTV, since I don't leave my home country for over 6 months, and therefore not stay over 180 days in Thailand, because otherwise my Thai GF might loose her residence permit in Netherlands.

Yes, in my normal life, except for the COVID-years, I never have stayed more than a couple of months without traveling.

Stamp is 180days each, you can extend for +180 one time per visit. Yes for 90day reporting, its not visa related its based on how long you stay

You get stamped in for 180 days each visit. At the end of that you can theoretically extend in-country without leaving but this may be difficult. This depends on what you have and your office. Some have done it OK, others may not have what they need (even though what they have was enough to get the visa in the first place).

Really depends, if you have the exact list of what your office wants, you probably can do it. You'll need the activity proof (work or soft power), then the money. Most offices seem to want proof of funds (the 500k) in a bank account (Thai or foreign) for 30 days before the extension, and there may be requirements to separately certify your ownership of the bank account (some banks- easy letter, some people can't get this). Some consulates accepted fintech or investment accounts for the visa, but immigration in country probably won't for an extension. But if you have everything- worth trying I think if you would only be leaving to fulfil the visa otherwise (some people would be travelling anyway). At the end of that 360 days you can't extend again so have to leave at that point anyway.

Many, probably most people avoid doing an in-country extension due to the hassles and just leave every 180 days.

You have to do 90 day reports, presuming you stay longer than 90 days. As most DTV people don't stay longer than 180, it's always the first one on an entry and can't be done online, unfortunately. I think I saw one report of someone succeeding, but most it will be rejected (I tried- was rejected, which I was expecting). If you do extend, you should be able to do the subsequent two online.

Last year my online 90 day report was rejected, this year it was approved.

Same address, so same immigration office.

ok thanks. So better to just leave every 180 days than to do the papermill with an extension. Will an agency do that?

Anonieme deelnemer If you still comply to all visa rules, and don't have a complicated situation needing a lot of paperwork, the extension might be the best solution.

When you not fully comply anymore, or need a lot of documents for your situation that all need an update, a border bounce is normally easier.

Anonymous participant I don't think an agency will help much with the extension, you'd still need the paperwork. Haven't heard of agencies assisting with this. I have heard of people doing land border runs with agencies. DTV you shouldn't have any issue coming back by yourself but agencies can run a tight system where they pick you up, get you straight to the border and straight back again ASAP.

i have tried online 3 times, always rejected saying "first report on each entry have to be made in person". I tried because some people online claim you can 😅 my friend whose been living here for 14years with retirement visa, visited his home country late last year, and had to do it in person, so its really about last entry not the history

I heard one person who had success with it, I think it was on one of the islands. It goes to your local immigration office, it's not a central system, so it still depends on their specific policy. But most won't take it online for the first. I have successfully used the online system on a past visa, when I was here for longer than 180 days in a row, but never on the first entry.
