Does anyone know how long it takes to get a new US passport? My retirement visa extension is due in 24 days and I'm worried I won't have a new passport in time.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The time it takes to get a new US passport can vary, with some expats reporting 2 weeks at the Bangkok embassy, although the official time may be longer (4-5 weeks). It's advised to apply for the passport as soon as possible, especially if a visa extension is due soon. Options include applying for an emergency passport, which can be received the same day, or planning ahead regarding visa extensions.

When I got a new US passport last year it took 1 month. Plan on whatever processing time the US embassy says it is.

When does your current passport expire? Did you already send it for renewal?

Why wait so long to get your new passport? You had an entire year to do it.
Either apply for the passport now, and worst case scenario is you pay an overstay when you apply for your extension if it comes late, OR
Apply for your next extension now, which will only give you until the expiration date of your passport. Then you'll have a new extension date each year moving forward.

It took me 2 weeks at the bkk embassy(they told me 4-5) You can also apply to get an emergency passport if necessary which you can get the same day to hold you over or until the regular one arrives..
Looking at the US Embassy BKK website, it gives me the impression appointments for in person application are no longer allowed. Only their mail-in online system can be used. I've got about a year to go before I must apply. Do they still allow in-person applications?
I just booked my appointment under another category... I had a special circumstance so I had no other option.

If anyone is interested, The US Embassy did reply to my enquire and simply sent the link for the appointment page. So for a normal passport renewal, it seems like only the mail-in service is available. Or as Brett Munson mentioned, schedule the appointment under another category.

Thanks! I sent an enquiry to them using their contact form on the passport page. Hopefully they will reply. I'm old fashioned, prefer in person. Nothing against Isaan, but I don't prefer posting passports by mail.
