Does anyone know if a letter from the VA confirming disability monthly income of over $4000 will qualify for the income requirement for the one year extension. Apparently, we're no longer able to get any confirmations from the US Embassy in Thailand.
Answer summary
The question concerns whether a letter from the V.A. confirming a monthly disability income exceeding $4000 qualifies for income requirements necessary for a one-year visa extension in Thailand. The responses clarify that such a letter will not suffice as Thai immigration authorities do not accept it as proof of income. For an initial one-year extension under retirement categories, proof must either consist of 800,000 baht maintained in a Thai bank account or a government-certified income source. Following the first extension, if a consistent monthly transfer of 65,000 baht is established for one year, it may then qualify for the income method in future extensions.

Short answer is no.. Long answer is no with more complications. You will need to transfer 65k baht each month from said VA disability payments, but simply showing them the payments from the VA to your US account does not qualify.

For the income method, the immigration I use wants to see bank transfer and the source of the funds. I use a VA letter for the proof of source.

When did you get a letter from the embassy? That ended years ago.

The US Embassy in Thailand has never verified income. They would provide an affidavit that certifies that you swear under penalty of perjury that what you say for your income is true and correct. Thai Immigration decided that wasn’t good enough because your bank statement wasn’t certified by the government so then they started requiring a Thai bank account with a deposit of a minimum ฿800,000. After the first extension of stay is granted, if you have monthly deposits around the same time of the month into your account for a year to satisfy the requirements and have the bank statement and letter, then you can try to apply for your new permission to stay with the required monthly deposits for the second year. Funny, your bank account statement is good enough for the Thai Embassy but not the Royal Thai Immigration Department. Welcome to dealing with the Thai government.

Jim McGowan It’s even crazier when you realize that the Hague convention of 1961 standardized apostille documents, including those showing social security income. Thailand is not a signatory and seen unaware it exists.

Meanwhile, Vietnam just joined.

Dante I just was reading about Thailand will start accepting apostille documents. "The Thai government will officially begin accepting apostilled documents on February 28, 2027. Thailand formally acceded to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention on June 30, 2026, becoming its 130th contracting party. However, according to the official timeline set by the Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH), the treaty requires a waiting period and does not enter into force for Thailand until early 2027. According to the Hague Conference on Private International Law's official status table, the Convention is scheduled to enter into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027.” We shall see what they decide to accept.

Uk doesn't stamp either for monthly income, maybe use an agent, but checks are getting more often and tighter

I thought VA disability was more a compensation than income hence why it's tax free in the US? A military pension would be considered income

GenuineHamster2398 whether its considered compensation or income the vet is getting it "monthly" for life and therefore the reason is irrelevant... the vet is getting it "monthly" for life.

GenuineHamster2398 it's non taxable anywhere on the world. Case closed. Don't complicate things when it works just fine. Thailand has excepted for decades. Nothing new here. 100 percent tax free ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD

GenuineHamster2398 thai bureaucrats can’t tell real documents from fake because Thailand is not a signatory to the convention on apostille documents

so they cook up their own unique requirements

For the first one year extension based on retirement, the ONLY thing you can use is proof of 800,000 baht in your Thai bank account, or embassy certified income. A VA letter will never be accepted by any immigration office. Anyone can make one of those.

During the firs year that you obtained using 800,000 baht in the bank, you can do an international transfer into your Thai bank account of at least 65,000 baht every single month. Then for your 2nd extension you can show them you kept the required money in your bank account from last year's extension, and you also have 12 months of international transfers into your bank account. This should let you switch to the income method, and you can then withdraw the funds from your bank account and continue the monthly transfers for as long as you remain in Thailand.

that’s what I thought - and still think! I interviewed an Immigration Lawyer yesterday who stated definitively that on the Non O you couldn’t do this. That you can only use the 800k deposit method. That was 1. No 2 was their insistence that I need a 12 month lease every year. Kind of annoying when the Thai consulate says as you do, on the 1st issue.

but moving forward the bank deposit are clearly marked as VA us treasury department. Doesn't get much clearer then that. 2nd year just fine and it's way above the required amount

I would never trust relying on that for my extension. Even if it's deposited directly into your Thai bank account, what if there's a funding issue with the government or some other issue that causes it to slip a few days and potentially miss a month and now you're not eligible for your next extension. It's much better to have it deposited into your home bank account and then handling the transfers yourself at the beginning of each month.

there is always a risk in almost everything you do in Thailand. I mean look at all the people that used Bangkok bank for years for their deposit. I did in he beginning but I have now changed banks. Holding funds as hostage for their own own immigration policy violates every and all international banking standards. It's never a straight forward policy like world class countries in Asia like Japan. End of this month I am heading to Japan for 90 days and taiwan for 90 days. All visa exempt and no bull shit. My Thai wife agrees it's time to consider moving back to Japan. Just don't think Thai gov really wants farang here anymore. I still have 9 months left on my extension bit flying out first of next month. Thailand seems to forget their stupid policies have consequences

some immigration offices( like Ubon) will require a copy of that letter when you start doing the monthly transfer method for an extension

Paul Ben-Yehuda no they don't. For the monthly method all you need is you bank statements showing each monthly deposit into your Thai bank account.

Kool Breez I have been doing the 65k method for 5 years now. Because I use Bangkok Banks online statements and just print them out both Pattaya/Jomtium immigration and just a week ago Surin immigration asked and looked for my Social Security statement letter. Showing I was receiving X $ a month.
