Hi all, my Dad is currently 7 days into his sandbox stay and has a 30 day tourist visa, he is British.

Thailand will now be on the UK red list from the 30th and he is considering trying to stay long term until it improves.

What visa extension options does he have as;

A tourist?

As he is 60, could he convert it to a longer term retirement visa?

Pending approval from my company, can I sponsor him as a dependent on my non-immigrant B visa?

Thanks in advance, this group is incredibly helpful.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A British tourist in Thailand currently on a visa-exempt entry (valid for 45 days initially), which can be extended for another 30 days at the immigration office. He is exploring options for a long-term stay. Possible options include extending the current tourist visa, converting to a Non-O retirement visa by depositing 800,000 THB in a Thai bank account, or potentially being sponsored as a dependent on a Non-B visa. The retirement visa would require him to be over 50 and have the funds mandated by Thai immigration laws.

Dang Tod. You know stuff :)

The 30 day visa is 45 til the end of September( 30+ sandbox 14). That might be enough. Or if he knows someone to help him he can get an extension for up to another month, at the immigration office. Need to have a return ticket though.

I have just returned on the 45 visa exempt but have extended twice previously.

@Benjamin *****
oh ok, I had to change my ticket to prove I was leaving

>Need to have a return ticket though.

A return ticket is not needed for a 30 day extension of stay based on tourism, and is generally not asked for a 60 day extension of stay based on unable to travel due to COVID-19.

My uninformed opinion is that a retirement visa is the easiest route of he has the correct funds...800,000 baht in a Thai bank account under solely his name.
Ellie *******
@Chris *****
He can do when he entered on the visa-exempt scheme, too. As long as he meets the requirements including minimum remaining days, he doesn't have to leave Thailand.
Richard *******
Elaine Ross the impression I got was that the fact I had a local Thai person with me to "vouch" for me was what made it easy for me. Or maybe just lucky, who knows.
Tod *********
Elaine Ross you would be incorrect. There is nothing in banking rules that prohibit a person from opening an account on ANY entry stamp. The rules are made up by that bank branches manager SO if one says you can't leave and walk to the next bank even of the same branch. You'll find one that will let you do it.

It just takes time, it takes not being offended by being told no and it takes willingness to hit 4 or 5 bank branches to get it done.

@Tod ********
most banks wont open an account for someone on a exempt entry or tourist visa< u need shop around
John **********
Elaine Ross It's perfectly possible to do so but you may have to shop around a bit. It helps if someone can vouch for you too, so I'd suggest he starts with his sons bank and takes his son along.

@Richard ******
but the 800.000 Thb has to be in his account for 3 months befores applying
Richard *********
@Godefridus ********
2 months not 3

for the 1 year extension>

no requirements for monies in bank for the 3 month non O visa
Tod *********
@Godefridus ********
totally INCORRECT 100% šŸ™

To apply for the in country Non-O 90 day visa there is no seasoning on the funds required at all. you only show the 800K baht was transferred in from overseas into a thai bank account in your name.

THEN once you get that 90 day Non-O visa you wait the 2 months seasoning required (it is NOT 3 months and hasn't been since Oct 2019 when they changed the rules about seasoning)

To get the year extension all he shows is the funds were in his account for 2 months AND he'll be able to do that because he just got a 90 day Non-O visa issued; so he'll have time to season the funds and then apply for the year extension
Godefridus *********
@Tod ********
i meant for reitirement non o
Ellie *******
@Godefridus ********
, if you enter Thailand on tourist status, You need to first apply for Non-O based on being over 50 (so-called retirement) in-country visa. At this time you don't need to season the fund. After 90days pass from that in-country non-o retirement visa, you want to apply for 1 year extension based on being over 50 to keep staying in Thailand. For this extension application, your fund needs to be "seasoned" for two months.

I bet you are on 1 year extension based on being over 50.
Stuart *********
@Godefridus ********
no it doesnā€™t. There is no seasoning requirement for a in country O visa. It just needs to be seen to have come from overseas.
Stuart *********
When he goes for the yearly extension the funds would have needed to be in the account for 2 months prior to applying.
Godefridus *********
@Stuart ********
i had to show my bank statement with 800.000 in Bangkok
Stuart *********
@Godefridus ********
perhaps youā€™re confusing applying for the initial O visa in country with applying for a yearly extension off an O visa.
Richard *******
Elaine Ross yes you can, though many/most banks/branches will say no. It is up to the individual branch, I opened with kasikorn whilst on a tourist visa.
Tod *********
I agree,
@Richard ******
it's the easiest and fastest way to go. It will require the least documentation to pull off and can be done without too much issues at most immigration offices
@Seb ****
have your father;

-Open a bank account in his name only

-Transfer the 800K baht into that thai bank account

-Go apply for the 90 day Non-O visa (2000baht)

-After the under consideration period go back and get that visa and new 90 day stamp inked in

-Wait until the money has been in the account for 2 months and go apply for the year extension (1900baht)
Chris ******
@Tod ********
He's here on an examption not a visa so he can't convert what he doesn't have to a Non-O correct? He would have to leave the country to get a visa and come back.
Tod *********
@Chris *****
poor choice of terminology on my part, on a visa exempt you apply for a new visa inside the country using form TM87 and on a tourist visa you apply for a change of visa (conversion) using form TM86
Ellie *******
@Chris *****
You can apply for an in-country Non-O visa (being over 50) while on tourist entry stamp at most of the immigration offices. No need to leave Thailand for that.
Benjamin ******
>A tourist?

He can get ONE 30 day extension of stay based on tourism at the local immigration office. Different immigration offices have different requirements, but all require:

1. His passport and:

a. a copy of his data ("picture") page

b. a copy of his most recent visa (if you have one)

c. a copy of his most recent stamp

d. a copy of his departure card

2. A TM30, filed in the immigration office.

3. The forms (each immigration office may have different forms, and want to use their special forms)

4. 2x passport pictures

5. 1,900 THB.

>As he is 60, could he convert it to a longer term retirement visa?

SOME immigration offices allow a person to purchase a 90 day Non-O visa INSIDE Thailand and then get a one year extension of stay based on retirement. This requires:

- 800K THB in a Thai bank account (NO seasoning requirements)

- Proof of being over 50

He can then get a one year extension of stay based on retirement. Ask the immigration office for the specific requirements.

>Pending approval from my company, can I sponsor him as a dependent on my non-immigrant B visa?

That would be another option. It's an option you, AND THE IMMIGRATION OFFICE, will have to talk about.

REGARDING THE 60 DAY EXTENSION OF STAY BASED ON UNABLE TO TRAVEL DUE TO COVID-19.

I would *not* assume he can acquire this extension of stay. The last day it is being sold is September 27th, and for most immigration offices he will need to get his first 30 day extension of stay based on tourism first. He can apply for an extension of stay at most immigration offices when he has 30 days or less remaining on his stamp.

Make him an employee and get him a work permitā€¦
Ellie *******
potentially, yes. But more employees have limited slots for foreign employees than ones with unlimited. Some requirements are not able to be meet immediately even how high they value the new employee.

Sorry I went too far already as I understand this is out of the scope of this group.
Darren *******
@Ellie ******
potentially, and they really value the OP...
Ellie *******
@Darren ******
Who knows OP's employer still has an available seat for the foreign employee..
Darren *******
@Benjamin *****
and also get the OP's employer to hire him too...
Benjamin ******
@Brian ******
Probably not an option. He will need to make 55K THB a month.

so punctual! thanks all. he arrived on visa exempt, pardon my early morning mis type.

Not sure this will sort itself out in an additional 30 days, so will explore retirement visa. Thank you all.

@Seb ****
Itā€™s more than likely that the covid extension will be extended, obviously this canā€™t be confirmed until the government announces it, but the situation right now isnā€™t great so removing it would be a little crazy.

When he leaves, he can use the current visa extension before the end of September which would give him another 60 days šŸ‘ŒšŸ»
Tod *********
@Seb ****
he got 45 days when he stamped in then, and he can get one 30 day extension without much problem at all. That gives you 75 days to look for other longer term visa options.
Greg ******
The retirement visa is a good option if he can afford to deposit 800k into a Thai account and leave it there
Tod *********
First off there is no 30 day tourist visa šŸ˜® SO if he didn't BUY a tourist visa from the thai consulate before he showed up here he was stamped in for free on what's known as a visa exempt entry AND he didn't get stamped in for 30 days but 45 days šŸ˜‰

Be that as it may,

he can get a 30 day extension on his visa exempt entry ONCE

OR

if they are still available when he needs an extension he could apply for a 60 day covid extension

OR

he could apply for an in country 90 day Non-O visa based on being over 50 (retirement) IF he transferred into a thai bank account in his name only 800K baht, and after that apply for a year extension

OR

you can deal with your company to see if you can get him a Non-O and then an extension that matches yours

Those are pretty much your options
Chris ********
@Tod ********
when are the 60 day covid extensions available to?
Chris ********
Thanks to you both again!
Wannikea *********
@Chris *******
in most cases the 30 day normal extension will be applied first if not used already
Chris ********
@Wannikea ********
so 30+60 then?
Tod *********
@Chris *******
yep, get the 30 day regular extension from a visa exempt or a tourist visa entry then apply for a 60 day covid extension (IF the program is still running)
Darren *******
@Chris *******
27 September
Chris ********
@Darren ******
assuming that they donā€™t extend it again?

Chris Larkin. Can never assume anything in Thailand. Some decisions often appear irrational.

@Darren ******
many thanks
Darren *******
You mean 60 days or 45 days visa exempt? If either, he will have one 30 day extension available to him and potentially the unable to travel due to covid extension if they continue that beyond 27 September.

Can you sponsor him as a dependent? No.

Retirement, I'll let someone more knowledgeable than me on that answer that.
James ********
Please clarify what visa he entered on... Tourist visa gives him 60 days on arrival...

Or did he enter visa exempt ...which gives him 45 days on arrival...

Both can be extended one time for 30 days at Thai immigration for 1,900 Thai baht.
Bobby ********
There's no such thing as a 30-day tourist visa. Can you please clarify?
