TLDR : Answer Summary
The approval time for a DTV visa application can vary significantly, typically ranging from 2 to 4 weeks depending on the embassy where you apply. It's strongly advised not to purchase flight tickets until your visa is approved, as leaving the jurisdiction of the applying embassy could complicate matters. While some users have shared negative experiences of using agents, others suggest that each case hinges on the specifics of the embassy involved. Overall, familiarity with the embassy's processes is crucial for success.
If u are going to one country in order to apply for DTV and of course you are not sure about the return date. I can make this problem away by offering the return ticket with fee of 10$ ( as an agent I can cancel ticket issued the same day without charge ). With this return ticket you can check in and enter the country without any issue once you enter the country I will cancel this ticket

It all depens on which Embassy you applied at.
You may not leave the jurisdiction of that Embassy until visa i granted.
NEVER buy tickets until approved.
Familiarize yourself with the embassy website

A post the other day was someone using an agent and got denied
the only option for you is to sign up for a soft power course that meets the requirements. In my view that needs to be a minimum of 6 months but preferably longer
You need to be in a remote position that allows you to be in Thailand working online. Sounds like the best option is Softpower via a course such as MuayThai or cooking or medical treatment
