I’ve been reading the horror stories about extending, if you did a border run how long were you gone?
Did you leave and come right back?

TLDR : Answer Summary
There is no specific time requirement for how long you must be outside Thailand during a border run; you can technically leave and return immediately, or stay away for longer periods. Many people take short trips to neighboring countries every 90 days to reset their visa status.

So basically live in Thailand and take a second vacation every 90 days to Philippines, Japan, Vietnam, South Korea, or any of the other countries and then come back to Thailand to recover. Got it.

You can literally be out of the country for a second if that's possible, and you get a new stamp.
Don't worry about coming back when you have a legit visa.
