I want to travel from the U.S. to Thailand for approximately 120 days next fall. I want to do this the easiest, least hassle, possible way. I can get a 90 day visa from home. After 90 days, can I fly to Vientiane for 5-6 days and return to Thailand and get a 30 day or 60 days visa on arrival?
Answer summary
The user wants to travel to Thailand for approximately 120 days, starting with a 90-day Non-O visa from the U.S. After 90 days, they plan to exit Thailand for about 5-6 days and then return for a new visa, hoping to obtain a 30 or 60-day visa on arrival. Commenters affirm that after the 90-day Non-O visa, the user can indeed exit to a neighboring country (like Vientiane, Laos) and re-enter Thailand, where they would likely receive a 60-day visa exempt stamp upon entry. They should be prepared to show proof of accommodation, funds, and onward travel. It's also mentioned that they can potentially apply for a 30-day extension in Thailand should they need more time.

You should be able to do another 60 days but you will only get a 7 day extension the 2nd time

yes, you can enter on a 90-days Non-Imm-O visa and not even need amn onward travel proof flying on this visa type. You can exit Thailand to a neighbour country before the 90-days stay permit expires and definitely can expect to get stamped in for 60 days stay permit on a visa-exempt re-entry into Thailand. You should however be able to show the famous three proofs for this entry: cash, accommodation and onward travel. But please keep in mind: if you already have an extensive travel history to Thailand in your passport - then expect to be pulled aside and asked, or worst, get denied entry

Andreas Mueller I do have a 20 year history of Thailand travel, mostly twice a year but primarily under 60 days per trip. I’ve only had two visa extensions, both for medical reasons. I’ve done no border runs. I am currently in Thailand on a 90 day non imm O visa. My current plan for November is 90 days non-imm O followed by a short trip to Vientiane. Then return by air to Thailand for another 2-3 weeks. Your opinion?

Andreas Mueller I want to do exactly what you describe here. But in 2025 I foolishly followed the advice of an agency and did a third border run. No bad comments or flags from IO but could this cause problems if I exit before my current 90-day non O expires then return a few days later to get a 60-day stamp? My longterm plan is to get a second non O from the USA in the fall and finally do the full 12- month extension of stay after that. 🤷

Use a border bounce agency to take you out and back into Thailand. They can ensure you won't have any issues.

It won't affect a non-O visa application.

Yes but I’ve just been concerned this could prevent my next non O application from being approved. I just need to get my house in the US sold and finally do the full retirement process in Thailand the appropriate way.

Multi tourist visa, 60 days and extend by 30 days at an immigration office, leave and return and do the same

It seems that I can get a 90 day non O visa, then fly out of Thailand for a few days, then fly back to Thailand and get a 30-60 day visa on arrival stamp. Is that correct?

Lew Brown Just keep in mind that they may not let you back in, it’s a slight chance tho. You can also pay for another 30 day extension. 1900 baht pays for that extension and it’s all done on the up and up.

OP
Charles Taylor you’re suggesting 90 day non O visa plus a 30 day extension? I’m concerned about being rejected for the 30 day extension. Otherwise this is definitely the easiest way to do it!

Yes, you’re correct

Lew Brown yes you can but only of your stamp history does not indicate a misuse of these visas and exempt entries for a longstay

@Lew ******
You could do that. But it's not visa on arrival. It's visa exempt.

If he first enters with a 90-day non O then leaves for a few days and gets a 60-day stamp when returning will this raise any flags if he applies from his home country for a second 90-day non O a few months after leaving Thailand again?

not likely

Yes I know that. I have 90 day non O visa now. But can I leave Thailand by air and return 6 days later and get a new visa on arrival stamp for 30-60 days?

You can get a 90 day non O visa. There isn’t a 90 day tourist visa.

If you want to extend visa waiver you will need to enter thailand by air

Get a60 day tousist vis can be extended in thailand at immigration for 30 days (1900 bht)

Then fly out as you say come back and get a 60 day visa exempt if you want a bit longer the visa exempt can be extended by 30 days as well.

You could get a 60 day visaexempt on first entry but safer now a days to have a proper visa. Second entry won't be an issue on exempt

Ian Sutton without knowing his history how can you recommend this ?

If you don't have a history of being in Thailand you could just come in visa exempt, get stamped in the for 60 days, exit Thailand to a nearby country for a couple of days and get another 60 days. You can extend this by 30 days if you need a bit of additional time

This guy is correct and is definitely the most hassle free way paperwork wise. It’s usually not too expensive to do a border hop back and forth.

Apply for an METV Visa in your home country. It's multiple entry good for six months, you can squeeze nine out of it. You'll need to show a flight into Thailand, a ticket out within 60 days, and then return ticket to Thailand sometime after that
