TLDR : Answer Summary
The response to how long one must stay outside Thailand after cancelling a work permit varies. Generally, it is advised to leave within 24 hours after cancelling. However, individuals must ensure they also cancel any extensions of stay associated with their work before leaving. Comments indicate that people can return quickly after obtaining a new visa, with some suggesting just crossing the border and coming back immediately. It's essential to follow proper procedures, including having the necessary termination paperwork and considering any requirements for a tourist visa if applicable.
I think you're a bit mixed up 😮 A work permit doesn't let you stay in thailand it lets you WORK here.
If you're on the initial 90 day entry of a Non-B visa you can stay until that 90 days runs out
Whereas if you're on an extension of stay based on employment (look at the stamp in your passport) you need to cancel the work permit, take that receipt and the termination paperwork to the immigration office that issued the extension, cancel it, then leave.
Most people cancel their extensions about a week or so before the termination date on their paperwork <- because immigrations cancels it effective the termination date and that lets you have time to coordinate getting out of the country

up to your case. too many exempt or visa run?
Following is for some who need to get TR visa.
don't do van or visa run. reckless driving, shit hotels and plus you can handle proces yourself, unless you have already got a warning by immigration.
As for getting tourist visa, pick Vientiane or Penang, up to your budget. plan ahead for scanned passport, photos, cash for "show money" etc for the process, including in and out(coming back to Thailand).
apply in Loas or Malaysia in evisa website, after you have stamped in your passport.
Have valid bookings for flight into Bangkok and hotel(not sure if showing house rental will make things easier or more difficult)
process will take 14 days at most, but usually it's 3 to 4 days.
then when coming back, be sure to have onward flight travel(either to your country or places like Vietnam. you can find cancellable ones. I will leave just at that).

You have to leave within 24 hours but can come right back after you get a new Visa
So you need to be out of the country long enough to apply for and get the Tourist Visa issued (see the Thai Embassy website of the country you will be visiting for timelines)
it takes 2 days to get your Visa. You submit your paperwork and pick it up the next day. I did it at Vientiane and Suvanaket. That was 10 years ago. I have heard you need to make an appointment now. You can’t just show up. I’m by no means an expert so confer with more people
leave by midnight on the date the cancellation of the work permit and extension. But if on the original 90 day visa with no extension then can stay till the visa expires
yes there is the 7 day extension denied and you must leave the country option as well. That extension typically starts the date it's applied for, so time the visit to immigration accordingly
