My wife and I are from Australia and wanting to retire there in the next couple of years . With the 800 K baht does this go into our Aussie account first for 3 months or a Thai account and how long does it need to be in the account from that point on? Can we draw on that money after 3 months?Does it need to be in a Thai account indefinitely? Thanks for any advice.
Answer summary
To meet the 800K Baht requirement for a Non-O visa as a retiree in Thailand, you can show the funds in your Australian account initially, but must transfer 800K Baht into a Thai bank account shortly after arriving. The funds must remain in the Thai account for a minimum of 2 months before applying for a 12-month extension. After receiving the extension, the balance should stay above 400K Baht for the following year but must revert to 800K 2-3 months before the next application. Each person requires an individual account, and it is advised not to touch the funds to avoid complications.

What I learnt from many expats from several different areas in Thailand. The best practise is to have 800K in your "Thai" bank account for 3-4 mounts prior your extension date, and left for extra 2 months once you are approved, then you can move it. Immigration rules in Thailand are highly localized.

You need individual Bank Account and 800k each, per Visa. If you chose Non-O retirement visa with dependant, then you only need 1 account - though it's not recommended as it could create problem with your spouse if something happened to the primary visa holder.

1) Get Non-O in home country

2) Enter Thailand

3) Immediately open Thai bank account

4) Fund with 800K Baht per person

5) When 800K is in bank for 2 months go to Immigration for your 1st year’s Retirement extension of stay.

6) 800K must STAY in bank for 3 more months

7) Bank balance can NOT fall under 400K Baht at any time within the next 12 months.

1 year later repeat 4-7

Alan Rothwell is there a limit as to how often you can extend?

Sophie Philps Not that I am aware of. If you stick to the plan/financial requirements, don't violate any laws, etc., you're a retiree in Thailand and are welcome to stay as long as you like.

The money must stay in a Thai bank account 3 months before and after. If your renewing your retirement visa every 12 months it must stay there. Alternatively, 65,000 baht per month income. However, you must show that being deposited every month for the previous 12 months before you apply for the visa.

I agree. What I wrote is not what has been written. Damn spelling. 65,000 baht for 12 months prior to application. Check out immigration and Thai website.

Once you have you non-O visas and have arrived in Thailand you go to Immigration and get a residency certificate each and then go to a Thai bank, I recommend Kasikorn as they are nore exppat friendly, and open a bank account for each of you, Then transfer/deposit the 800,000 Baht or more in EACH account and all of this has to be completed within the first month. After the money has been in the accounts for 2 months MINIMUM and before the non-O visa expires you can apply for the 12 month permission of stay in Thailand, this requires a letter from the bank and a bank statement showing then money has been in the account for the 3 months as well as proof of where you are living (rental agreement etc). After this the bank accounts (both) have to stay at or above 800,000 Baht for the next 3 months after which they can drop but must stay at or above 400,000 Baht but must go back to at or above 800,000 3 months (some places accept 2 months) before the next extension. When you do subsiquent extensions you will need to produce a 12 month bank statement that proves the money hasn't dropped below the required ammonuts and if it has then you probably won't get the extension. So put simply, you both need to put 800,000 in Thai bank accounts not just 800,000 in 1 account for both of you. Also the money needs tostay there all the time but it can drop to 400,000 for the 6 months in the middle of the extension period so kong as it returns to 800,000 in time for the next extension. I put the 800,000 Baht in my bank 14 years ago and haven't touched it since, I use a separate account for living expenses so that I don't accidentally drop below the required amount but also aware that it needs to be more than just the 800,000 as the banks wil be taking fees from the account so it needs to be topped up now and again

Andrew Copeland Griggs Kasikorn pay interest. 1,000 thb for year and withholding tax 150 thb on 800k thb.

Hi there I'm from Australia and in the initial process of going through to get my extension at the end of October.

I was advised by other expats to do the online Thai E visa 45-30 days before your departure date.

It's a pretty easy process and with mine they wanted more documents in the form of my drivers licence which I did.

I got my visa approval about two weeks before I left Australia.

Once here you need to open a Thai bank account I used KBank again that's what other expats advised to use.

I have two accounts so one for the 800'000 Thai baht to season and another account to pay my bills.

I did it from Oz originally .

I am sure you need 800,000 per person though.

To apply for the initial 90 day Non-O visa before you travel to Thailand you can show the money in your home account. Once you get to Thailand you need to open a Thai bank account and transfer a minimum of 800k baht into it within the first couple of weeks as it has to sit in the account for 2 months before you can apply for the 12 months extension of stay. After you receive that extension the 800k baht must remain in the account for 3 months and can't drop below 400k baht at any point, before coming back up to 800k 2 months (3 in some places) before applying for the 2nd extension

, Rod Simpson it depends on where you plan on retiring in Thailand as different provinces have different policies. We only have 1 x 800,000 in a Thai account because my husband and I are married I am classified as a dependent and therefore don’t need to also have that 800,000 just sitting in an account practically doing nothing. I did have get my Australian marriage certificate notarised in Bangkok and then go to a lawyer and have the certificate translated into Thai before doing our first 12 months extension.

@Kylie *******
that depends on how you go about it rather than the province, but you can't normally start out that way. It's a question of changing the purpose of your extension later

Kylie Murphy To go "that way" now it is usual for the primary visa to be a Non-OA then, if the Embassy/Consulate will issue it, a dependent Non-O for the spouse.

Rod Simpson at the end of 1st year of extension of stay you can use the 800k baht as long as you both transfer 65k baht per month each to Thai bank per month. Some couples I know have left 800k in one account and just transfer minimum to other partners account in 2nd year, then you can use the one lot of 800k to pay rent or buy motorbike or car etc. Whatever works best for you.

Apply in Australia. In your au bank. Go to Thailand open account deposit the money and season it for 2 months apply for the 12 months extension. I think its 2 or 3 months must stay in account then can not go below 400k, then must be 800k for next extension.

You can not spend it all. Others will advise if I got any above wrong. I have OX so not done the Non O myself.
