it’s not really visa related but wondering if anyone has experience getting a thai drivers license. specifically motorbike.

i know the correct channel to do so however all appointments at the department of transport are taken until december. i’ve heard of schools with which you can sit the test so an appointment with the transport department isn’t necessary.

does anyone have recommendations in bangkok? i’m time orientated as i only have 2 weeks to do it for various reasons. cheers!

TLDR : Answer Summary
An expat in Bangkok is seeking advice on how to obtain a Thai motorbike driver's license due to fully booked appointments at the Department of Transport. Community members recommend various alternatives such as private driving schools that expedite the process, experiences with obtaining the license using foreign documents, and advice on online booking issues. Suggested locations include KW Driving School and Honda Safety Riding Park, with anecdotes about costs and required documents.

Get a International drivers license in your homecountry before departing.

There may be months long queue to get a appointment for a drivingtest in Thailand.

Check the website of the local DLT office.

If you’re in Pattaya go to One Stop Visa on Soi 6. They’ll get one for you.

@Ian *******
did you already have a bike license in your home country?

@Lewis *******
Yes, along with an IDP.

Online for foreigners doesn’t work. It lets you register, but as you saw, all slots are full. Maybe in future? You need to go in person and book an appointment, for Banglamung. The Rayong DLT allows some walk ins

I just got my retirement visa and need to do this.

Do they do an exchange license if you ate from a certain country like the UK does?

I'm in Bangkok so any help and advice would be much appreciated

Any agent can sort it but you still have to go and do the test but it is very easy as long as you have a driving licence in your own country

I brought to thailand a idp and all I had to do is an online course took 10 minutes answer a few questions and then do driver reaction test at dlt and got my licence
David **********
It cost me 300 baht

Yes I got one

Some appointed private schools can get lessons and test done in 2days and you bring the documents from the school and collect your licence at the DLT

I walked into the Bang Chak DLT office and they had a notebook where you could sign up for an appointment much earlier than the online calendar.

I chose one month later because I also needed to get a residency certificate and I thought that was going to take a while. I think they had earlier times.

I just did it last week in bkk

Brought my country’s D/L all Thai residency documents and pink ID along with passport

Took the Thai Computer Based Course which was free and took 1 hour

Dr note (฿300), ฿300 for D/L

Total cost was ฿650 That’s with the BTS fare

Agent quoted me ฿10k to get the D/L

Location is the Chatuchak DMV, took 1 day

@Jer***
pink ID 😅
Jeremy ********
@Alex ******
it helps out when doing things in Thailand
Alex *******
@Jer***
what has it helped you with?
Jeremy ********
@Alex ******
the D/L…hospitals registration and forms, setting a phone plan, opening a Bank acct, checking into hotels

Everything is useful if you find a way to make it useful if not it will always be useless

One time I used it to get home in a taxi…I was off my head and forgot my address I handed it to the taxi and he took me home
Alex *******
@Jer***
now that you have a Thai driving licence you can throw away the pink ID ✅
Jeremy ********
@Alex ******
just FYI I just looked at my Thai D/L and they used my Pink ID Card number and not my passport number

This means I don’t have to update it when I get a new passport

It’s not as worthless as you say it is
Jeremy ********
@Alex ******
that’s your prerogative and I respect that

But it’s wrong and hateful to say

That ID has a purpose and a place plus it has your address on it with a recognized Thai ID number

So I will keep using it to spite you
Andrew ********
KW driving school in chiang mai i just did it.

KW Driving School

An IDP is only honored on thailnd for 90 days. If you plan to stay longer helps to have a license.

See if they have a facility near you in Bangkok they can get you in quicker then transportation office

Do you have a motorbike licence from your home country? Either way Honda Safety Riding Park is your best bet.
