I am looking into buying a moped in Bangkok. Is it required to have a Thai driving or motorcycle license? And if so, what are the best places to go to acquire a license? Thank you for your suggestions!

TLDR : Answer Summary
To purchase a moped in Bangkok, it's not strictly necessary to show a driving license, as sellers may not ask for it initially. However, if you wish to register the moped in your name, you will need a Thai motorcycle license and a Certificate of Residency. If you're on a tourist visa, acquiring these can be challenging. If you already hold a full motorcycle license and an International Driving Permit, you can drive but need to convert your license to a Thai one within 90 days.

Nobody will ask you to show driving license if you want to buy a motorbike.

If you want to buy a motorbike and put it on your name, you will have to go to emigration and get a Certificate of residency. And if you are on a tourist visa in Bangkok it's impossible for sure.

Thanks for the information! If I obtain a certificate of residency, then I can put the bike in my name?

yes, that's true. It's easier than you buy the bike in the same province as you live.

I bought a motorbike in BKK and Pattaya and they both absolutely required a copy of my Thai motorbike license to make the purchase.

If you hold a full motorcycle licence and International Driving Permit this should initially cover you. After 90 days in country you need to convert that into a Thai Licence at the Land Transport Office. If you don't hold a motorcycle licence I think you can go and complete the test and get a Thai licence
