Thai TIN number under DTV?

Hi! Did anyone get a Thai tax (TIN) number successfully with a DTV + 183+ days stay / year? I've heard very controversial info on this. I'd need this to revoke tax residency in my home country, as the tax office asks for country and proof, where the taxes will be paid. Thanks in advance for all smart replies.
Answer summary
Obtaining a Thai Tax Identification Number (TIN) with a DTV visa and staying over 183 days is possible but can be complex. Many users reported successfully acquiring a TIN as long as they demonstrate relevant income. A TIN is generally issued only after filing a tax return, which can only be filed post the previous fiscal year (March of the following year). Expats might need to provide additional documents such as Thai bank statements and proof of income. Additionally, a TIN alone may not suffice for proving tax residency to foreign tax authorities; a Certificate of Residency for Tax Purposes may be required instead.

this is quite confusing - im glad you asked the question

1) You can only get your TIN on year N+1 at the moment you declare and pay taxes if any, which is happening in March of every year, just go to your closest tax office, they may ask for Thai bank statements and matching documents (invoices, payslips), but they won't check your passport nor your visa, so your only issue with DTV is getting a Thai bank account

2) After you got your TIN, you will be able to declare and pay online the next years, no documents are needed to declare online, just enter the amounts and pay

3) But if you want to get a "Certificate of Residency for Tax Purposes" (which is named "R.O.22" in Thailand), after you declared, you need to physically go to your closest tax office and ask for it, they will ask for your passport (to check if you spent >180 days in Thailand) and bank statements, then it takes about a month, during this period they can ask for more documents (invoices, payslips), and then they will deliver it physically to your home address in Thailand (they won't give it by email), that means you must go to Thailand every year after you were a tax resident

KindDachshund6786 This means that technically if you really want a TIN right now, you must declare the previous year, since they technically don't check your passport, but they may ask for bank statements in a Thai bank and the matching invoices, which you normally don't have if this is the first time you come in Thailand, and you may pay fine because it was supposed to be declared in March

Participant anonyme 733 No, less than 180 days in Thailand means that your are tax resident of your country (country of nationality)

So how do you get a TIN without a bank account? Some say you need bank. I pay tax on my home countru and there is a tax treaty, but i need to do the paperwork

1) TrueMoney can give account statements even though it's not a real bank

2) The Wise app will open real Thai bank accounts to DTV holders starting June/July

3) You can always say that you withdrew money from ATMs but you may have to show your home country bank statements showing the ATM transactions

tax residency has nothing to do with a bank account. If I close all my bank accounts in my home country, I won't be revoked from tax duty ;)

Yes, as long as you can demonstrate relevant income, you will get a TIN. Having said that, a mere Thai TIN will not likely be proof for your home country. Instead, you would need a "Thai Tax Certificate of Residence" - which you can only get after you have submitted a tax return.

makes sense. This means + 1 year for my original plan. Ok, can live with that, thanks for the info and the idea what to check more deeply - didn't think about this myself.

Yes I went to the tax office and they filed the return and took the payment there

how long are you in the country already? Is it your first year or you've stayed longer before?

I can’t remember but it was defo over 180 days, I stopped counting after 180. It’s the first year I stayed 180+ since the rules changed and I became a tax resident

You might have to wait until you are due to pay Thai tax, which is the first 3 months of the year following the year in which you incur a Thai tax liability. To be a Thai tax resident you just need to spend 180 days or more inside Thailand in a calendar year but this in itself may not be enough for the Thai Revenue Department to issue a TIN

this also makes sense. Would mean I can technically do my plan after one year, not same year. But still doable

except you said you were only going to bring in savings so wouldn't be a Thai tax payers.

nope, only assessable income comes with a Thai tax liability. Savings you had prior to becoming a Thai tax resident are not assessable income

you pay taxes from money that you bring into country, so declaring sending (even from savings) does make one obligated to pay tax. As far as I know

Yes no problem

were you asked for any source or amount of income or they don't care as long as you meet the criteria staying in the country 183+ days / year? Basically don't plan to have income, just live on savings. Thanks

i said because i moved away from my home country and get problem with new bank accounts if i dont have a tin. :)

yes, that's also one of the reasons. Still better paying 0 - 5% tax in Thailand vs 22% in my country, which I don't care about. Thanks for your info.

why on earth would they give you a TIN if you're not a tax payer?

KindDachshund6786 I was not asked to provide this. I am a student though. I made it clear the reason was being more than 180 days in the country

Yes, they will ask for a proof of income (invoices/payslips/dividends) and a proof that you brought that money here (Thai bank statements)

@Али *******************
no, you only pay tax on assessable income. If you are bringing in savings accumulated before you were a Thai tax resident that does not constitute assessable income

taxes are paid from money, that one brings into the country. Paying for rent + cashouts at atm's is taxable money

Being a Thai tax resident by itself doesn't entitle you to a TIN in my view. You first need to bring assessable income into Thailand and you said you wouldn't be doing that. So, again in my view, you won't be entitled to a TIN. No harm in asking though,

you become one with DTV and spending 183 days / year in the country. That's the law. On the other hand, I heard people had issues getting it (SEA and laws is a very controversial thing sometimes).
