What are the steps to obtain tax residency in Thailand with a DTV visa and how does it relate to Canadian tax residency?

You cannot give up tax residency in Canada. You must beat the CRA checklist. Your income cannot be based from a business in Canada, you can’t own anything at all in Canada period. Even a couch in storage will still push it over into tax resident. Close all bank accounts and credit cards, sell everything you own and pay the exit tax and file the exit tax - you’re allowed to keep 25k of goods and property without paying exit tax. But of anything over you have to pay first. Don’t leave a spouse or dependants in Canada, and if there’s things you cannot sell like a business then you need to converts share value at the time of departure and pay the exit tax as deemed disposition- but then you can keep your shares after paying tax on them going forward. Next you have to prove your life is in anew location with property lease or deed, gym pass banking insurances, and a new country has to officially recognize you as the new tax resident there properly, which is awkward in Thailand but why do that anyway put tax residency in UAE or Paraguay first then live in Asia way easier.

This may sound like a painful list but it’s not really that hard . I did it over a 2 year period and then got a new residency tax certificate and was clear of Canada . Anyone can do it just steps to follow for a clear exit. Don’t listen to anyone who said “ but my brother did 1,2,3 etc. yes lots of people get away with stuff that isn’t noticed . You can take that risk if you want but why? Read the CRA docs and follow the steps . Sleep at night .
