TLDR : Answer Summary
To choose an agency for starting your retirement visa process in Thailand, consider doing thorough research, asking for referrals, and reading customer reviews. You can also explore local Facebook groups related to your desired city for recommendations. Some users suggest using the online e-visa portal or visiting your local immigration office directly, as they can provide assistance without the risks associated with involving an agency. The discussions highlight both the advantages and potential downsides of using agencies versus handling the visa application process independently.

Go thru the threads to find agencies that have decent reps. However, it seems using an agency comes with risks.

1). Appears you end up tied to one immigration office. If you move that can be a problem

2). You’re handing over the whole bank guarantee process to the agent. On the face of it this doesn’t seem wise and creates opportunities for all manner of risk if and when the government does one of their periodic immigration crack downs.

You can do all of this yourself either by getting an O A in your home country or getting an O after arrival. There’s a bit of running around, printing, stamping and signing but IMO it’s worth it

I've had nothing even close to what you're describing. My agent has and continues to be terrific.

you’re lucky until the government changes the rules. Also you’re out of pocket for stuff you could have done. For me it was two trips to the embassy in Singapore and done.

The best agency to use is either the online evisa portal or your local immigration office in Thailand depending on your location

For the simple reason that an agent will get it all set up and completed without wasting my time and effort. A great decision I made and I recommend it as the best approach to anyone else.

yeah and violates the rules and the law (bribery) if he doesn't have the cash which can have bad consequences. If he has the cash it's a different situation of course.

I agree with you 100%. If a person doesn't have the financial means then stay home. Too many try to skirt the system which is indeed problematic. In my situation I already planned ahead and just needed a bucket to drop the cash in which my agent set up properly and legally.
